iPhone :: Prius thread

Thanx for your sharing your experience of the iPhone/Prius combination with us.

As a prospective iPhone buyer and Prius owner, I have some questions:

1) Does the iPhone work with an existing ipod connector for charging/playing music? I have an old Griffin Powerpod that uses the one connector for both power and line-in for my current ipod.

2) Does anyone have any experience with using existing address book data (phone number) in the Prius with a different phone? Does this get wiped out if you switch phones?
- if not, then I have finally found a great use for my old T610 ... just sync my contacts from my desktop (iMac), then mate this phone with the Prius and push the address book entries, and finally re-mate the phone of my choice to the Prius, keeping the address book entries.


Again, it rocks that we have a Prius/iPhone user post their comments so quickly

 

I asked about this in another forum but no one is responding. Well, I'm trying to set up my Iphone with the bluetooth in my Prius. My car's manual said I need to put the 4 digit code in my car on my phone. But how do I do that? I went to the bluetooth screen on my IPhone but there's no where to put the code. Or am I totally off of what I should be doing? I now some users said that they should sync with each other. But I sat there for a while and nothing. It just says devices and searching. Can anyone help me?

 

Just to clarify, on the 2004 Prius, the sync code is 1212.
You turn on the phone's bluetooth in the Settings --> General category.

We use the cassette adapter in our '04 Prius and of course it works as usual.

I got the following reply from Griffin regarding using the prior ipod version of PowerJolt, instead of the new iphone version:

"From our testing, the PowerJolt seems to work just fine with the iPhone, but it has not been approved for that use by Apple. For this reason, I can only recommend using the PowerJolt for iPhone.

Thanks everyone. I'll try it as soon as I get a chance. My baby isn't home yet and yes I speak of my car. I love my car to death and I'm starting to love this phone just the same. Hopefully I can get the bluetooth to work. I'll be back in a couple of days. Either asking more questions or thanking you all again.

 

I'm wondering if anyone is experiencing volume issues when their iphone is connected to the prius handsfree system? My problem is that I can have the volume turned all the way up yet it sounds as if its turned almost all the way down. The first 30 seconds are usually okay and then the sound drops considerably. I've found that its particularly bad when I accelerate. I previously owned a Motorola Q and used it with the prius without any problems like this. Its also worth mentioning that I owned an 8GB iPhone before purchasing the 16GB version...both have the same problem with my 2004 Prius.

For what it's worth, I am planning on taking advantage of Apple's new iPhone SDK to create an app I'm tentatively dubbing "Bluetooth Buddy" which will (I hope) implement OPP support so the iPhone can push contacts to the Prius. Maybe now by announcing this publicly I'll actually feel compelled to complete it. I have until June, right?

I'm the opposite of most, I have an iPhone and my Prius is on order.

I think the challenge, kindda mentioned in some geek speak, is that the bluetooth in the iPhone is enabled to only transmit audio, not data (such as Address Book info). Perhaps, as mentioned, with the software developer kit for iPhone this will change.

Lastly, I too, am interested in mounting options. I'll be using a bluetooth headset, and want to get an integrated/hardwired iPod system. I have such a beast in my other car (Mercedes ML 320) and it is a wonderful user experience.

Are you experiencing the volume drop while using the phone part of the iPhone? Or, the iPod part of the iPhone? Also, are you using the Aux-In connection to the stereo system, or some other (VAIS/DICE/etc.) interface?

 

I have had an IPhone for about 5 months. The phone paired with the Prius, easily, from the get-go. All of the phone's info ( signal strength, battery charge level, etc.) are displayed on the MFD.

The only thing that doesn't work is the ability to transfer my phone book from the phone to the Prius. That isn't a problem for me because I had previously downloaded my phone book from my "Rosetta Stone" phone, an old Sony-ERiccson T68i.

Both sent and received calls are totally transparent. When a call is terminated by the party on the other end, the display shows "call terminated by network". Sometimes it's a little strange when the IPhone is in my shirt pocket and the phone vibrates just before the Prius picks up the call.

 

That is the one weakness that I have found in the iPhone. Hopefully, mr_zorg will have a solution in the not too distant future.

Sadly, you'll have to wait until after July since you can't install any apps without the 2.0 firmware. For that matter, I may have to wait too since I can only run on the simulator, and I don't think the simulator implements bluetooth functionality. So, I can code everything up to the actual sending of the data (I'm working on learning the UI right now), but that will have to wait. :/

Hmm. I guess my plan worked. Now I definitely feel the pressure to get it done.

 

Perhaps there's another way...I have the SDK installed. So perhaps you can share the code and I upload it via the simulator and help test it that way.

I haven't tried to see if the BT linkage is there or not--never occurred to me to try as I've been testing sites that I work on. I can ask a buddy of mine if he sees anything in the simulator that would indicate that the OS X bluetooth connectivity might bridge to the simulator.

I've been trying to find out if a new iPhone 3G would work with my 2005 Prius and it doesn't look promising. (I thought 'Bluetooth' was supposed to be a 'standard'! Humph! )

And then I thought:

I wonder if now that Apple have released the SDK, someone could write an application that made the phone's Bluetooth talk properly with the Prius?

I never had any problems with the iphone and pairing with the bluetooth. I also have the iphone 3G and it worked perfectly with the prius. The only problem I had is the old power cord I used with my ipod and iphone in the car did not work with the 3G. Had to buy a new one that had a USB outlet and used the power cord that came with it.
