It requires the Toyota scan tool...you'll need to pay your service dept. to do it for you.

Can a Non smart key from an old prius purchased on ebay BE reprogrammed? Is the key programmmed to the car or is the car programmed to accept any old remote?

SKS and non-SKS fobs are not interchangeable. The car is programmed to recognize the fob, I believe.

BTW, welcome to PriusChat, 05 Solar Prius!

    Thanks for the warm welcome.

"I believe" is nice, but how do i know for sure?

i'm not trying to interchange them, i'm trying to find out (my original key which is not a smart key [black emblem]) if i can buy any old "Dumb" key [black emblem] on ebay for a song can be programed to my car. The always lying dealers who want to sell me a new one for a million dollars tell me once they are programed to one prius they are garbage. I need to know if the car is programed to accept any key (old or new) or if the key is programmed to the car. Can anyone help me?

The car is programmed to recognize the key fob, not the other way around. I have never heard of anyone able to use the old style fobs with the SKS. That doesn't mean it's impossible, but I find it unlikely.

again tom, i am not trying to substitute sks for any other fob, i am merely trying to get another black emblem key for my non sks 05 prius with "dumb" key. now on to bigger and better things.

Is there a way to program my prius to recognize the new remote (from ebay) myself? i have heard about the insert and remove and lock and unlock the door procedure. does that really work?

Well folks, this is NOT a myth, it works great

Finally! How to program a non-SKS key/fob. Detailed!
Ok folks THIS is really how you do this, and yes it really does work. I bought three old keys on ebay anywhere from $23.52 to $50 even. Make sure you have on your original key and have looked on the back for a black toyota logo. This WILL NOT work for the smart keys with the SILVER toyota logo. To get started go to ebay and find an auction for a black logo key. Bid and win and when it gets there, follow these instructions carefully.

The Fob (for operating the car)
This isn't hard, as long as your new fob is not broken and you are able to follow simple directions. The whole process will take less than two minutes.

    1. Insert old fob into slot and remove it 4 times in a row, and insert it a fifth time but leave it in there!
    2. Open and close driver door 6 times.
    3. Remove old fob from slot. Car is in fob programming mode at this point.
    4. Insert new fob and leave in the slot for a full minute. Watch the blinking red anti-theft light on the dashboard. When it stops flashing and goes dark, your new fob is all set.
    5. Remove the new fob and you're done. You should test both fobs to be sure they work properly.

Now for the door lock functions.

The Fob (for remotely unlocking/locking the doors)
    1. Open the driver door with no fob in slot and the driver door unlocked and opened. Other doors can be locked or unlocked, it doesn't matter.
    2. Insert old fob into slot and remove it twice within 5 seconds.
    3. Close and open driver door twice.
    4. Insert and remove old fob once.
    5. Close and open driver door twice again.
    6. Insert old fob in slot and close door.
    7. Without pressing the brake, press power button, wait a second, press it again, wait a second, press it a third time to turn car back off.
    8. Remove old fob from slot. You'll be in "add mode" at this point.
    9. Car should lock and unlock doors TWICE to verify it is in add mode.
    10. Press both buttons on new fob simultaneously for a second and a half!.
11 Within 3 seconds, press only the lock symbol button. yes it does matter which!
    12. Car should respond with one quick lock/unlock to verify that the new fob is all set. If the car responds with two lock/unlocks, that means it didn't work. I don't know how to troubleshoot that problem. Maybe just try again.
    13. To end this programming, open a door or put fob in the slot.
    14. Enjoy the savings from NOT buying a fob from the dealership!!!!!
    15. If you want metal keys, DO not buy them from ebay, they quoted me $7.92 CUT by them from dealer.

Well even though I have been told by my Toyota dealer I can't use the programing steps from the US Prius because the Australian car is different, I tried the proceedure from the linked thread and what do you know, it worked!! Thanks 05 Solar Prius and amethystjw.

Go ahead and try it if you need a fob, you have nothing to lose and there are saving in doing this with a secondhand key fob.

Going to have a beer now, paid for with some of my savings.

    And it's recycling!!

I was pretty excited to follow rigormortis' procedure to get my Ebay black emblem fob to work in the 05 prius today (to start the car), however the door unlock section of the procedure doesn't work for me. I double checked and tried many times, but when I remove the old fob (step 8) I just get One lock/unlock (should be two per step 9), and there is no response to the new fob button steps following.

Any idea how much should I expect the dealer to charge just for the door unlocking procedure to be added to my new fob?

Since new I've now lost tree fobs, after the first two I had fun towing the car 300 miles on a holiday to a dealer and waiting till the following day for my $800+ bill.

Update. I just got my remote door lock to work after all! Turns out that ONE lock/unlock cycle was OK to indicate programming mode. See posts by Scott121 and my more detailed one at Re: Do Key Fobs from E-bay Work for 07 (black logo)?
