Well, this weekend I installed a new headunit in my Prius- the Pioneer DEH-P980BT. I have a 2005 Prius package 6 with the JBL premium system. Thanks to everyone for all the great info. I used the following resources:

    Dash Disassembly- Chris Dragon
    JBL Amp/Speaker Config- Tom Morrow
    Radio Harness/Wire Diagram- Crutchfield

The best comprehensive collection of information I found is here.

I spliced the speaker wires from the JBL amp and ran them to the headunit, which is installed in the bin under the factory headunit. I ended up just wiring the front and rear woofers off the 9 speakers for now. I snagged 12v from the same harness. In the dash I snagged the acc, ill, and gnd from the stock harness.

Then, I ran my monster RCA's back to the trunk for my sub and component amp (components to be installed soon). I tapped 12v from the battery in the hatch, acc from behind the headunit and grounded to a bolt near the trunk 12v battery.

Next, I ran my sirius satellite radio (SIR-PNR1) and hid the box up underneath the glovebox. Finally, I installed the ipod connector (CDIB-100II) and ran it stealth into the bottom drawer of the center console... that was probably the trickiest part.

The mic for the bluetooth is mounted on the drivers side dash- see pics.

I got it all back together only to discover that I had no keyless entry, no smartkey, no navigation, no clock, no domelights, and no power locks. Fabulous! So I went to bed. The next day I thought it through and started checking fuses... indeed, #39 was blown under the hood. With a quick swap everything was back in business and working well.

Everything sounds great and looks even better! See pictures as well. Hey- not bad, for a girl... right?!

Hit me up with any questions!

    Thanks,
    JFLX60D

    OK, I have some questions.

Did you say that you still have the JBL amp, and you installed the new head unit after it? (Seems like that's wrong?) If so, how does that work? Do you have all the steering wheel functionality intact? Voice commands and BT still intact? (I assume not on the BT, since you installed a mic.)

    Thanks for the pix!

The JBL amp is still there but the speakers are not running through it. I'm not 100% clear on all the wiring. The bluetooth etc is all in tact, but I'm not using it because the new headunit has bluetooth and I am using that. All the steering wheel functionality works except for the volume and other radio controls- but the info, menu, climate controls are all good. I am considering going back and wiring the center speaker back through the left speaker in the amp to get volume back for the nav... but honestly, I don't miss the noise all that much!

This looks great.... Good info too, just what I'm looking for! thanks, Here's a couple of questions

1what did you use for the remote on (REM) for the amp?

2 What did you do with "the data leads for the multi-function display unit, they are PK (pin #9) and WT (pin #10) - To retain full climate control functions, a 68 ohm resistor must be connected between these two wires."- Crutchfield

Since I don't have the JBL, where is this plug? Under the passenger seat?

In addition to losing steering wheel control of the radio, I assume the audio screen on the mfd is gone as well.

Alrighty- yes, you lose the steering wheel function for radio controls and the audio screen just reads audio off.

As for the rem wire on the amp, I ran a wire back from the JBL amp harness, in your case you could just tap into the wire on the factory harness that you use for the new stereo. There may be another wire for something in the trunk that you could use, but I never found one.

I went ahead and put the 68 ohm resistor between the two wires although it seemed to function fine without it. I just wanted to be safe and for $.98, it was worth it to me. I just bared wire on both the pink and white and wrapped the resistor around and taped it up. This was the last thing I did and frankly due to exhaustion, it is a little sloppy.

The plug with the pink and white wire is in the back of the factory headunit- if you're looking face on toward the dash it is on the right. I think that is what you were refering to.

I was pleased to discover that after shredding the jbl harness I still have navigation audio in the left speaker- a modern miracle, perhaps. I am planning to eventually jump that to the center speaker that is no longer in use. I'm still recovering from the last install- I'm afraid if I did this for a living my hands would look like hamburger meat.

I'm glad you all are finding this helpful! Let me know if you have any more questions.

I've been thinking of sending the Bluetooth signal to that speaker (which is currently disconnected). Wonder if that's possible.

I am pretty sure it is the same output for both, so if you jump one it should jump both.

nice work girl, it looks awesome. I am going to try to install my fujitsu radio too :) By the way most of the links do not work anymore. Can you explain a bit more how you were able to hook up a second radio to the prius. Yoiu just spliced the cables?

you probably did not splice them, it doesnt say that anywhere, then how?

We beat this topic to death in another thread. On a 2005 this works because the signal for the left door woofer goes from the JBL amp into the Nav, which can then disconnect the audio signal and drive the speaker directly with the Nav voice or Bluetooth audio signal. The wiring diagram shows this clearly. On a 2007 this would not work because Nav and Bluetooth audio actually go through the JBL amp, they're not "injected" downstream like on a 2005. Not sure abou a 2006. If that was the year the JBL amp changed to three connectors, then it's probably like a 2007 and not a 2005.

On your 2005, you'll have to get the signal for the left door speaker coming out of the nav and connect that to the wiring for the center speaker. Then you'd need to run a separate pair of wires to drive the left front speaker. That might actually be easier than trying to swap the speaker wiring both under the passenger seat, and in the dash.

Hey there- only one link wasn't working, as opposed to "most" of them- I tried to update it but had some trouble. You can just google Chris Dragon Prius and you will find a version of it. All the other links work just fine.

I'm not really sure what further to say in a broad sense, but I'd be happy to answer more specific questions. All the speakers run into the JBL amp so I just spliced them on the front side of the amp and ran them to the dash up to the new headunit. I also spliced the 12v, gnd, and acc from the same harness and grabbed the ill from the prius' radio harness. I hope this makes sense... if not, let me know! Thanks.
