we had a suburban several years ago, bought it to tow our camper. on the surface, looked like the ideal solution. the suburban had the extra storage so often needed when camping (my mom took the "take it all with you" to the extreme!!).

but after the overhead carrier and back was loaded up, (we removed the last bench for these trips) the vehicle barely had enough power to pull the trailer. now it would make it, but there was nothing left for hills, passing, etc.

after a few years of messing with it, my dad dumped the thing, got a ford F-150 with a 460 ci engine and never had any issues.

me??, i moved out, went camping with what i could put in the trunk of my car, called it good enough!!

I'm thinking that gas will hit $4.50 - 5 sometime next year and those gas guzzlers will get really cheap. So you could wait until then.

I did post just to see what kind of flack I would get.

I did cringe the first time I filled it up. It was a real pain because the pump would only allow me to do $50 at a time with my credit card. It cost me $125 to fill it up. It holds over 30 gallons.

A Toyota Hyhy is not nearly as much of a truck as a Suburban. The burb will have 2 adults and four kids for ski and camping trips. That amount of gear will not fit in a HyHy.

It fits my needs perfectly. It only cost me $6k and it has plenty of life left in it. I think environmentally, it makes more sense to have an old big truck like that for occassional trips than getting rid of the Prius and buying a modern truck. My net pollution will be less with my Prius + old truck, than with just a Modern truck. The new truck I was considering was a Mazda CX-9. It was a nice truck, then I came up with the idea to buy an old Suburban.

Hmmm...I'm glad we haven't (yet) seen a repeat of the "Betrayed you all..." thread.

I know, it's one of my best stories from practicing dirt law over 22 years. It sounds so absurd (and in her case, so diva-ish) on its face. But when you think about it, it made perfect sense. People negotiate and acquire parking rights in their apartment and office building garages all the time. In this case, the building didn't have a garage. But it had a freight elevator and floors that used to carry and withstand the weight of railroad cars (a railroad track once ran through it, literally; the building used to be a warehouse for goods shipped by rail). So, why not?

You are absolutely right. I didn't mean to imply otherwise. Given the options, I think you did the smartest thing.

I thought of a good name for my plan to have PriusChat members buy up all of the used gas guzzlers and park them:

    The Sequestered SUVâ„¢ Program. ;)

Winston, I think it's great that you have the sense of humor to come here and throw yourself into the fray like this! LOL

    :fencing:

Now, about that Suburban... you really should only be hauling an Airstream with that, you know.

Hey winston, I am on your side one this one, just didn't have the conjones to start a new thread about it. I have mentioned that I have a large, 4X4 dodge truck (big engine and tires). Some things the prius just wont do, (two foot deep oatmeal mud? I dont think so, river fording while towing a trailer, nope. Hauling a ski nautique, twin seadoos, or 4 wheelers, nuh huh. The prius is a really great car, I love it, but it is a TOOL, as such doesn't work in all situations. Drive your prius, enjoy it, use your burb as you need to. OBTW last fill up in the truck was a little over 115, and the gas station from the land before time had a 50 dollar limit on cc too, but NO READER. I ended up with 3 old style carbon copies for fuel... took forever. Keep on truckin'...

i dont think this even "qualifies" as a "betrayal" thread at all.

on the one hand, we have a Prius driver going to one of the worst possible gas guzzlers made and never gave a good enough (imm and in many others) reason for completely abandoning the hybrid idea. he pretty much said he was glad he totaled the car making the excuse to get the other vehicle a convenient decision...

in this case, the Prius is still his primary vehicle, and he realizes (as we all do whether we admit it or not) that the Prius cannot fill every transportation need.

The CX-9 probably guzzles as much gas even though it's a V6. It looks great and I love the design but the fuel mileage is just appalling for that kind of vehicle.

I had to spend money to save gas today. I am trying to do a "Winston" in reverse. ;) I guess I cheated because technology was able to give me something my minivan was providing exclusively.

My family likes to travel to cultural events in NO VA, D.C., and Maryland but the kids get so bored during the traveling time. The Mystery Machine doesn't have a DVD player so my wife selects sanity over MPG on the long trips. She didn't want to buy a portable DVD player for the Prius because we have child #3 due this summer and the Prius doesn't have room for three car seats. I convinced her that a DVD player would pay for itself with the gas it saved in a short time. Viola, now we get to drive the Mystery Machine on long trips! I'll have to do some math to figure out the payoff mileage...

    Jack,

I think efusco and others have managed to squeeze 3 car seats into the rear of the Prius. I think there are at least a couple of threads and pictures about it somewhere on PC.

Thanks, Boo! Our 19 MPG Honda Odyssey is an awesome vehicle but the 50 MPG Mystery Machine is preferred....:D

Winston, I am sorry that there isn't an easy technological solution for your space/power needs.

You don't know how lucky you Americans are! I just filled up my Prius and that cost $80+ . Petrol here is over £1.05 a litre - so that is nearly £5 an imperial gallon. Think $10 a gallon - would you buy a Suburban then?! :)
