I have an opportunity to buy a 2004 Prius with Pkg. # 2 and 21,000 miles from a Toyota dealer. It would not be a certified car @ the price they're quoting me. To certify the car is an extra $550. To buy the remainder of a 7 year/100,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty is an extra $800.

The dealer wants $17,200 for the car. Is this too much for this car? I know prices vary on 2004's, but there will be no warranty on this vehicle except for the Hybrid parts. Would this be a good or bad deal for me?

    Thanks for your input.

the fee is legit, the dealers have to pay a fee to toyota to certify a vehicle. the power train would be covered for 100,000 miles if you certify it, and you would also be elgible for new car financing, if that matters to you. based on the blue book value the car sounds like it might be a good deal.

but one warning.. and it probably would be a deal breaker for me, and it would steer me towards a new car is that the warranties on this car (except roadside assistance and the comprehensive 3 month 3,000 warranty) roll back to the 2004 model year. so this being 2008 your only going to have another 3 years 79,000 miles left!

i bet the dealership still makes money if you do not want the warranty i bet they get a refund from tfs when they sell it.

if it was me i might want the bumper to bumper to be included in the price

OK, The car was bought from this dealer new. They have all maint. records on the car. The salesperson told me we can buy a 3 or 4 yr. bumper to bumper war. from Toyota. The price is not known today as the salesman is @ home until Monday. Perhaps around 11 or $1200.

In our case we can't afford to take on any debt @ this time. We can come up with the $$ for this car by trading in our 2003 Honda Accord & paying around $5200 in cash out the door. The extended warranty is optional. We would end up with 2 Prius's that we can afford to drive. Our Accord has a 6 cyl. engine and we don't drive it anymore because of the poor MPG. We intend to keep our Prius's for a long time. We're very interested in this car because of the low miles & we know this dealer.

We would love to buy a new Prius, but can't. The 2004 Prius belongs to an 88 yr. old man who bought it new from this dealer and he's buying another new Prius from the same dealer. We bought our 2006 Prius from this dealer & they are very reputable. I have seen their ads on this forum in the past.

Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Well consider this ~ our 2004 (bought used in '04) package 9 was $18.500 with under 12K miles, + $900 something for 0 deductable bumper to bumper extended warranty. That said, you can probably do a tad better from a private party (maybe check autotrader.com or ebay ... which is where we got both our hybrids).

We decided that $16.9K was too much for a soon to be 5 yr. old Prius. The dlr. was only going to allow us $12K for an exceptionally nice 2003 Honda Accord EX with only 38,000 miles on it.

We went to CarsDirect.com and priced a 2008 Prius with pkg. 1 & floor mats. To buy it with no trade was around $21.8K + freight & taxes.

As we are Sam's Club members we priced a Prius with pkg. 1 & floor mats again. Our cost was $20.9K + freight, tax, etc. and Sam's uses the same dlr. that we went to last week. The salesman told us last week that the pkg. 1 car was listed @ $23.9K, but he was going to give us this great deal of $21.9K ???

So, we would have had the Honda "stolen" from us @ a mere $12K- Both Kelly BB & NADA say that Honda should sell to a private party for $14-14.5K with the low miles & near exc. cond. It is an Accord EX-V6, the top of the line Accord for 2003.

We agreed that buying new after we sell our Honda is the only way to go. I don't like car dlrs anyway as they are all crooks.

To those of you who answered our post- Thanks.:)

I think that is a constant. Even good dealers are still dealers and dealers are crooks! Even good salesmen are still salesmen!
