Making "backup copy" of 2008 Nav disk

    This is harder than I expected.
    I have a 2007 Touring and have acquired a 2008 Nav disk. I wanted to make a backup copy of the new disk. I created an iso of the disk, burned it to a double layer memorex disk, installed it. ......and got the Cannot read maps...check DVD message. However, when I put the original disk back I discovered that the 2008 backup had updated the firmware in the Nav system and I no longer had the "press I agree" page when starting it up. That means at least part of the disk (the loader)was readable. I verified the disk and it is an exact copy of the iso, and it is fully readable on my computer.

    So, now I have a nav system that acts like a 2008 but reads 2007 disks. (Not all that bad really, at least I don't have to hit "I agree" any more).

    I have tried unplugging the nav comuter for several minutes to reset, and I have also opened it up and hit the reset button (which appears to actually be pressed by the eject button anyway), no luck.

    My question is.. has anyone figured out exactly what is needed to make a backup of a 2008 nav disk?

    aahooy matey!! arg... arg... i smell a pirate afloat... :D of course you own a 2008 prius with nav and are using this only for backup purposes?

    hmmm... I did use a+R disk, have you found the the -R disks are more compatible the with the Nav drive?

    older dvd readers dont work with dvd+r

    so maybe the prius is kind a old:D just using a cheap dvd reader and only needs te read the dvd roms... zo maybe only dvd-r works
    or maybe only factory pressed?

    o w8... the nav system updated? so its reading the disc... mmm ok....maybe you need a disc special for the 2007 model.. have look at your 2007 disc and 2008 disc and see what files are diferent.

    question : is the voice response working
    i discoverd that when i remove the nav dvd the voice rec system is not working .. so the nav disc also provides voice messages.

    I just reloaded the DVD+R backup copy, and it almost worked. The system identified it as a ver 7.1 disk, voice commands worked, the GPS compass would give me coordinates, but it still couldn't find maps. After another reboot it couldn't find the disk at all and voice commands didn't work. This makes me think the problem really is the media itself, and the disk I used is pretty marginal. I'll try burning the backup on a good -R disk as soon as I get one.

    Edit....After doing some online reading it looks like in the Dual Layer world +R disks are far more compatible than the -R version. Has to do with different book types and the -R versions inability to use the iso's specified layer break. I can't confirm this but thats the prevailing wisdom online. I may try another brand of +R or a -R just in case.

    I would actually use the NAV if it weren't for that stupid "I agree" button that I have to push every time.

    please keep us posted. I have an 05 and i used a verbatim DVD+R DL disk, w similar problem (loader loaded but map fail)...... At least now i know memorex and verbatim doesnt work....

    I just bought a 2008 Package 6. I did not get a NAV disk with the vehicle. :mad:
    The NAV system works fine. Should I go back and demand a disk?

    The NAV disk is inside the NAV ECU which is found under the drivers seat of the Prius. If your NAV is working, then the disk is in there - it wouldn't work otherwise.

    Thanks dogfriend. That was going to be my next question since I just spotted the nav unit under the seat last night while going after lost keys. I didn't notice a disk slot, but I will check it out later. Much better than my Trailblazer SS that kept disk in the CD player (no changer) and gave you the choice of nav OR music. Glad I am rid of that gas hog.

    There's a cover you pop off, then slide a lever to eject the disc. Note that the car has to be powered on to eject it.

    Are you sure the Nav takes double-layer discs? I didn't think it did.

    Yup, the disk has over 7 GB of data on it, it has to be a double layer disk.

    Trying to avoid :deadhorse:

    But has anyone made a working backup? I ran a search about this and only found this thread. Everyone talks about how to eject the disk but no success stories? If I missed the grail thread with my answer, many apologies...

    Oh, and no piracy here. 2008 owner looking to backup 2008 disk.

    Still no luck. I was able to burn copies of the earlier gen disk on my 2005, but not on my newer 2007. I wonder if they added some sort of additional copy protection when they updated the hardware?

    I was able to back it up; I'm running a backup copy right now. I used a Memorex DVD+R double-layer DVD (and a Liteon double-layer drive).

    I used Nero to save the original to a .NRG file. I then went into Recorder >> Choose Recorder >> Options, and set Book type to DVD-ROM.

    I then opened the NRG file and burned it to the DVD.

    Thanks for the tips alanh. I created an ISO with DVDDecrypter (settings were defaulted in the ISO Read Mode tab in DVDDecrypter to 1)create MDS File 2)remove IFO RC Protection and 3)remove IFO RCE Protection. No other boxes checked.)

    Opened the resulting ISO in Nero 7 Platinum and burned at 2.4x with a LiteOn drive, of course, making sure to finalize the disk.

    Took about 45 minutes to burn, and another 20 minutes to verify the written data, but the backup disk is up and running as though it were the original disk. :bounce: I also used a Memorex Double Layer DVD+R.
