I've read many comments on other sites, both positive and negative, about the plan to turn off the lights for an hour. Did you participate? What was it like where you live?

No participation here. Infact, I was out cruising around town last night and only 3-4 major buildings shut there lights off. People just kept doing what they usually do.

I don't think anyone in my town cares either. Bunch of rich yuppies. But I always have my lights out anyways. I like candles and reading magazines so I didn't need the electricity. I am pretty sure NJ wasn't even on the list of states that will be participating.

No, and no difference here. It was a complete non-event, other than Google changing their home page for the day.

It was a non-event in NYC too. I didn't even know about it until after it passed when the news showed pictures of a darkened top of the Empire State Building.

I wasn't home - but made sure all my lights were off... at least I thought I had :p Didn't realize the back porch light was on .. at least its a Fluorescent.

I always make sure I don't leave unneccesary lights/electronics on. I like to keep my utility bills as low as possible.

This accomplished absolutely nothing. However, it does demonstrate that the wacked out environmental movement has, indeed, turned into a religion with its own pope (Al Gore), college of cardinals (the UN), holy sites (ANWR, North American continental shelf), sacraments (hybrid cars, CFL bulbs), paradise (earth), devil (petroleum), sins (driving Hummers), doctrines (man-made global warming) and now rituals (sitting in the dark for an hour).

Where is the separation of church and state when you need it?

At around 4:00pm yesterday afternoon I asked my wife if this was the evening when we were supposed to turn off our lights.

At around 10:00am this morning I asked if last night was the evening when we were supposed to turn off or light.

During the daylight hours, we normally have windows open and work by natural lighting. After sundown, only those lights - CFLs - that are needed are on. All in all, I bet it accomplished almost as much as a day of boycotting gasoline.

Apparently is was quite the 'non-event' in San Francisco too.

The news channels showed where some lights (not all) were turned off on the Golden Gate and Bay bridges, and the terminal building's clock tower, but many people who drove over to Treasure Island to witness the spectacle were highly disappointed. A resounding, "is that it?"

In Sacramento the lights on the State Capitol building were turned off. That happens quite often anyways. And they have some pretty dim bulbs working inside too. ;)

A lot of publicity here both on the media and @ work (I'm part of a green team). At work we had all but emergency lights off; fans were turned off. I live in a high-rise condo complex overlooking downtown. In the 3 high rises 99% of the units were dark; downtown was much darker; CN Tower was dimmed ...
I just saw on the news that hydro reported a near 9% drop in demand.

I saw various news reports about it on TV but it was all about what other cities were doing -- no mention of anything happening in DC.

I was watching a DVD at the time and totally forgot about it.

How many people turned off the 20 watt compact fluro and continued to watch a 450 watt plasma TV?

Whole thing was stupid and just a feel good exercises so people who do nothing for the environment can say they did something.

If it was serious it would be from 4PM to 5PM on a mid winter weekday and the street lights would go off all night that night.

Remember when the street lights were turned off at 2AM?

Why? I turn out my lights like hundreds of thousands of minnesotans do for 7-8 hours every night. Like 1 measly hour is gonna make a difference.

What does turning off your lights have to do with your post Jimmie?
Did you copy and past it from a "I drive a truck to look like more of a man" forum?

Your whole diatribe that I quoted was ignorant. You have misconceptions about many things where the environment is concerned and your worldview/political views seem to impede further learning. Drop these ill-conceived notions and start fresh with an open mind and you'll/we'll be much better off.

As to your second reply, yes 1 hour could make a huge difference when extrapolated over billions of people but that was not exactly the point of the exercise. Your view is the exact opposite of what Earth Hour was trying to achieve.

"Earth Hour is a global event created to symbolize that each one of us, working together, can make a positive impact on climate change - no matter who we are or where we live." - WWF

My family treated it like the learning exercise it was. We turned off everything we could find, including the gas furnace, and got by with a couple of flashlights. No TV, video games, computers, or candles. We fasted, too, except for a few shared bites of a chocolate bunny. So, some people took it seriously, and we learnt we could do with less. That, to me, seemed like the whole point.

    How diplomatic of you.
It's pretty difficult to teach someone who already knows everything, isn't it?

As rough as it sounds that is how I got over my learning impediment. :p

I am yet ignorant of many things but I approach things with an open mind. :)
