I've had my Prius for 10 days or so. Beautiful blue mica color. I washed it yesterday for the first time, by hand, and man is it pretty in the sun. I'm getting 48.2 Avg MPG so far. The only regret I have is no Cruise Control or MP3 input on my base model. I wish I had bought one when they came out, but no matter - I have one now. My wife keeps stealing it to run errands because "She wants to save gas." She drives a 2007 Toyota Sienna 22MPG, the only vehicle other than a Suburban/big SUV that would fit our family of two adults and 3 teenagers each over 5'10". She finally admitted that she likes it ;)

Most of the people at work have said positive things. I have one co-worker that started trying to debate global warming with me when he saw my car, which is silly, because I didn't buy the car as a "political statement", I bought it because I want to reduce my gas consumption and environmental impact. Little does he know that I am about as Conservative as they come (but that doesn't mean I want to starve old people and destroy the environment - that thinking is as much a lie as saying that all Democrats are Marxist hippies ;).

Anyway, to the point - I have been getting a lot of negative stuff from people here and there - they all seem to have a friend of a friend who . . .

    - Has a hybrid and has nothing but trouble with it.

    - Knew someone who got in an accident and EMS wouldn't help them because they were afraid of high voltage.

    - Got in a accident and the high voltage really did cause a problem.

    - Thinks the batteries and the manufacture of said batteries cause much more environmental damage than emissions do.

    - Thinks that they're really slow, or that they have a limited range.

    - Thinks I plug it in ;)

    - Just wait 'til you have to get it fixed!

    - Thinks it's really small and doesn't get how I can fit in one (I'm a 6'4", 300 Pound body-builder type)

I liked all the attention at first, but I'm getting a little annoyed. I've been trying to refute all this nonsense by showing people, trying to change their preconceived notions and hearsay so maybe they would consider one and get rid of their F-350 or their Jeep Commander.

    I know - you'll have probably gone through the same thing for eons . . . ;)

On the plus side, a fellow engineer has been looking at turning his Miata into an electric car after riding in my Prius – he’s just crazy enough to attempt it.

I guess it's a slow process of chipping away at the stone. I guess I can take heart that it costs me less to go to work than it does them to go to the next intersection.

I just sum it up by remembering that the majority of people are ignorant yet they like to pretend they know something that you do not and thus feel obligated to tell you stories. Most of their stories are false in nature and originate from questionable sources. ;)

Just enjoy the car and when one of these people come to you with their "stories" you have two choices:

#1 Give them sources to learn the truth.

#2 Smile knowingly while nodding your head (this unnerves people and makes them unsure of their dialog). According to the Jepson Manual "Higher Plants of California" Hahaha

I would just smile and say "Thanks, I'm really happy with the car. So how 'bout those [fill in name of favorite sports team here]?"

It's just not worth the aggravation.

I would have to agree with ny biker. I tell people I am more than happy with my Prius and that it is a bad day when I get less than 45 MPG. I generally shrug my shoulders when they come up with one of the standard Prius myths, state that I haven't had any of those issues, and tell them where to do some research if they want to be better informed. Data from Consumer Reports about reliability, cost of ownership, and owner satisfaction is my backup if they really want some unbiased data.

Yours is not a unique situation (there have been others that have had similar stories). Good for you, though, for getting a car that meets your needs and being patient with those who can't fathom such things.

You know though, think back to when you first starting telling your friends that you were having your first child. Remember how excited they were for you. and then, under some weird form of thinking they were being helpful, they told you all the horrific stories of other people's pregancies going horribly wrong. And then quickly following up with, well, I'm sure your pregnancy will be fine.

Me thinks those are the same people questioning your Prius purchase.

    Morons.

Despite the fact I don't own a Prius (yet) and never have, I just don't get the whole "the batteries are harmful to the environment" argument. They are NiMH batteries, which are less toxic than NiCAD batteries, and NiMH can be recycled. Almost any store that sells regular batteries (AA, C, D, etc...) sells NiMH rechargables. Why aren't those getting a bad rap too....

Exactly, and how many thousand of those gets thrown in the trash daily?

Edendad, congrats on the Prius! I am looking to buy one real soon and I am getting all excited, I have rented the Prius before and really love the car. At my work I have a lot of big muscle car and pick up truck drivers and when they hear I am buying a Prius I get all kinds of flack, but I tell them I'll be the one laughing when I'll be getting 45 mpg on my Prius. The only guy at work who understands me is a guy who owns two classic Mini Coopers. say just shrug it off, sooner or later those people who are spending half their salary on their gas tank will start asking you more and more about your Prius...

i know how you feel about the aggravators. ive had the car 4 months now and ive seen the negatives and the positive ppl too.

"good you can save the earth for all of us"
"that car is like driving a golf cart"
"is it a van? its ugly"

but i love sneaking up behind ppl with the car, scares them how quiet it can be lol. ive even caught my bosses trying to convince others to get a hybrid and using my car as an example yes i know their strange. again ive gotten use to miami traffic but driving this car its as if you dont exist on the road with the gas mongers, i sometimes get nervous on my way home, considering i do go the limit or 5 over and ppl just fly by me or they ride on my lane and the one next to me cutting me off, or slamming on their brakes hard and then driving off fast, ive gotten the dirty looks or the high beams to move out the way.

Yea, a lot of drivers are really aggressive and occasionally abusive to me as well. But I encountered that in my old pickup too (2005 Nissan Frontier) - they just don't understand when you actually follow the rules of the road and don't get out of their way.

I drive 47 miles each way to work - I live in the country and work in Tampa. So I spend 30+ miles on I-75. I stick to the right or center lanes and rarely venture into the left lane. Not that I'm scared, just that I find that if I get in the left lane I can get caught up in the intensity and next thing I know I'm doing 85 MPH with everyone else. It's a self-discipline thing to drive slower for me.

I've started to make a game out of trying to maximize the mileage readout by trying to control my coasting and plan my hills and valleys.

yea same here except i deal with alot of f150's f350's escaldades yada yada giant cars, and they always try to run right by me, but i have had some of them just get right behind me and just drive slow like me, i guess their trying to save gas too.

i feel your pain, vegas has the worst drivers, they have no regard for the rules of the road. And 45=65 on streets. I've had several lifted trucks, and a mustang full of dope kids pull up beside me and rev, wanting to race off the line..i just smile and look like im fixin to gun it, and sit there as they peel out! The worst occasion was when i was fueling up, a dousche bag in a very nice 87 buick pulled up and stuck his head out the window, "buy an american car, hippie"..and rolled off. Lol little does he know, im the exact opposite of a "hippie"

Pick the one you dislike the most and turn him into a puddle of broken bones and flesh goo. The others will now leave you alone and may even complinment you on your wise decision to purchase the Prius.:biggrin1:

I don't get those things as much but I used to.

I just smile and ask, "did you hear that from a Prius driver themselves?" or "really? if you have their phone number I'll call them because I'd really like to get more information about that."

This forces them to admit that, no, they did not hear this from a real hybrid driver. That they maybe heard it on the radio or read it on a blog (probably conservative :p) and they are just mindlessly repeating what they were to believe. There are also erroneous articles out there making wild accusations about hybrids dating from 2004 and 2005 when the Prius Gen 2 went primetime. Most of the "facts" presented have long since been disputed but the disputes are never publicized with as much enthusiasm as the original bashing.

They give a hard time not only to Prii, but to anyone who drives sensibly & comfortably.

My previous car was a '95 Wrangler, basic 4-cyl. Everyone seemed to think that all Jeep drivers are hot-rodders, and they'd get just as impatient behind me, as when I'm in the Prius.

As the earlier posters have said -- we all just keep on smiling & saving. :D

Just cause I have a big arse truck all jacked up and a dog who likes to hang his head out the window doesn't make me a redneck. I've heard the redneck thing so many times that it has become comical. People tailgated me in my big truck just as much as they do in my Earth First Prius. I just didn't see them in my truck cause the truck is so freaking huge. I am always amazed at the tailgaters anyway, why does driving a car make it ok to be rude? If you were walking through the mall, and going slow, would some people just walk up right behind you and start pushing you to walk faster? I don't think so! I always try to remember when someone is being rude, a 30 second bad choice can lead to a lifetime of misery! Let it go! Smile and truck on! :brushteeth:
