a week ago i purchased a toyota 2ZZ-GE which some of you know are the engines on the matrix XRS and lotus exige and elise, well this weekend i managed to install the engine in my 2005 prius, i removed the existing 4 cylinder engine unbolting it from the transaxle, and to my surprise the 2zz fits perfectly onto the transaxle, bolting exactly where it should, i then proceeded to use the original engine mounts from the matrix on the prius with some fabrication. In the end i had about 189 hp engine on the Toyota Prius, this paired with the electric motor and a modified ECU to allow engine RPM to reach 7000 RPM, brought my 0-60 times to the 5 second range.

Forgot to mention the transaxle has a external cooler with an 12 volt electric fan.

    FAST!

Actually, if one could find a salvage inverter with associated pcm, and reverse engineer the control algorithms, it may be possible

It would also cost so much you'd be better off just getting a pocket rocket for weekend duty. For some reason, Honda S2000's don't keep their value around here, they're fairly cheap to buy

I suppose a feather light rwd rag top in a climate that can dip to -40 might have something to do with that

Still, can you imagine a Prius sleeper like that? That would raise eyebrows

    yes, its april fools
but honestly in my opinion i think its possible, minus the vvt lift technology, which possibly gives it the extra oomph that the other ZZ series engines dont have, it would require reprogramming of ECU to accept vvti-L and redline of about 8000 rpm, which in turn would require the motor generators to have extra cooling and or a different gearset.

when i really think about it the gas engine really is a separate entity from the electric motor on the prius, theres not much information fed to ecu from the engine other than stuff from coil packs, injectors, crank and cam sensors, intake manfiodl stuff well, basically you could find all these parts on other cars.

to take a ZZ engine and modify it for a prius would require taking out alternator and starter and random other things.

    Hi All,

Wacky Idea - put a spacer between the head and the block and get longer con-rods, and run on high octane fuel ? Think that would work. No mods to the VVTi or anything else, except maybe the hood to get it to fit under.
