Last night, for the first time, while I was using FireFox for routine web browsing and Prius Chatting, it shut down. Just went away. I thought perhaps I had accidentally minimized it (to tray) but nope, it was gone. So I re-launched it and Session Saver brought me right back to where I was.

When I switched tabs, it shut down again.

    Re-launch and Session Saver.

When I clicked a topic into a new tab, it shut down again. I tried this with EasyGestures as well as holding the [Ctrl] key and clicking.

It doesn't happen all the time. Sometimes I can get three or up to five good clicks before it closes but other times it'll happen two or three times in a row.

I've removed FireFox and reinstalled. But it still happens.

    Thoughts, anyone?
And please be quick, I'm in IE6 Hell right now.

Did you install an April fools plugin that only runs on April 1st?

I am running Firefox 3 beta 4 on a Vista machine. It seems very stable.

You could install a version of FF3bx as a back-up, or as I do, use it full time and have Firefox 2 as the back-up. They both peacefully co-exist in separate folders. FF3 also has some nifty new features I am now totally hooked on . . . but remember, some of your addons will not work unless they have been updated/tested by their author.

TonyP, Did you cycle the OS on and off three times to clear the malfunction codes?
Maybe you can rig that Scan Gage II to read the computer's OS malfunction codes. :p

have you tried not using tabs and open new windows instead? i only do tabs for links in thread i am reading, otherwise i do new windows for new threads

firefox did do an update recently... (less than a week ago.... i think...maybe a bit longer or shorter...) if you reinstalled i have to guess you have the most recent version...

other than that, i would look microsoft sabotage. my XP home and Win 98 computers have noticably slowed down in recent weeks and i think its microsofts big push to vista that is causing it. (need to stop those automatic updates!@!) but maybe they have started a campaign against FF...
    then again, maybe i paranoid.

It could be a BCAK error.

(BCAK = Between Chair And Keyboard) :typing:

could be... are you switching tabs with keyboard shortcuts or clicking with mouse? if using shortcuts, definitely check to see you are using right one. also set the "warn me when closing more than one tab" thingy

i only use safari and FF and it has worked on PC for me for years. started using FF before i started at PC

Don't use "restore session"... I would guess that there is something (malformed java command?) on one of the tab pages that is triggering shutdown.

    Start a whole new session.

I'd also suggest physically dumping and trashing your firefox cache. I used to have to do that in Mozilla periodically.

I'm home now and using a different machine.

It continued doing it through multiple sessions and new windows. At first I thought it was a PriusChat things because I had been maneuvering around a different site for several clicks but then it pooped again.

I thought of all the simple things: accidental key press, ID-10T error, but no luck.

I actually did have v3beta installed but recently uninstalled it. I guess I can dump the cache, cycle the power three times, hook up the scan gauge, and try again.

I'll have to check it again tomorrow.

I'd agree with starting a new session. But after all those tries, the next thing I'd do is re-boot the computer. I've occasionally had a program misbehave until I re-boot.

Firefox quits on me once in a while.

If you're on a Mac and Firefox goes flaky, you could use Safari. If you're not on a Mac, you should be. :D

turn off the scripting muck and nuke the plug-ins.
    .
The mere fact that a browser crashed based on content that
you loaded may very well mean that your pwn3d by now.

I'll stick with Linux. You get the same type of OS under the hood, without the Apple straitjacket.
