according to one of the supposed dealer assistant service managers that have posted on this forum, the prius ships with synthetic 0w20 oil... but you may want to take what he said with a grain of salt..

also, another forum, priusonline has someone posting the below:

    Liar, Liar, Pants on fire.

Moron, Moron, .......uh, what rhymes with moron??

Anyway, don't take your car to Jiffy Lube. Would you have an eye operation at a place called Jiffy Lasik?

Great analogy! Funny, too! It hits home because my wife is an Optometrist, and the "jiffy lube" equivalent of a LASIK surgery center (or any medical specialty, for that matter) actually do exist! Basically, with eye surgery, you get what you pay for!

Back on subject... In years past I wouldn't avoid Jiffy Lube only because I would watch them like a hawk and I was strict about only letting them do the work that I originally asked for. I haven't been to Jiffy Lube in years, though. Being in in the military affords me the privilege and convenience of using the Military Exchange auto shops. I usually use them for small routine stuff, and use the Toyota dealer for only the major service (like 60,000 mile service). I trust the Exchange auto shops when it comes to quality work and honesty, but occassionally I'll run into the dumb shop receptionist whose lack of common sense empowers him/her to bill me for extra stuff that should be free. For example, quite frequently I'll ask in advance for both a brake inspection and a tire rotation, expecting to be charged for only one of them. Inevitably, they'll try to bill me for both. How much extra labor is it to rotate tires when all the tires are already off for a brake inspection? Charge me for one or the other, but not both!! I always win that argument.

Um .... "Moron, moron, full of Boron??"

Nah, that doesn't make any sense. I'll have to think about this after heavy drinking

It doesn't make sense to me that a liar's pants would spontaneously combust either. However, if you think heavy drinking will be enlightening, who am I to argue? :D

TSB EG018-06, dated March 29, 2006, contradicts this. According to that document, 0W-20 is only being used in the new 2AZ-FE engine.

TSB EG050-04, dated April 10, 2007, indicates that 5W-30 is the correct viscosity for 2001-2007 Prius.

See my msg #18 in the following string to retrieve the TSBs, if you are interested.

I'm not sure if this is off topic (What was the topic again?) but I lived in Davis, CA for about 3 yrs when I was a grad student. One of my Material Science professors told us that the groundwater in Davis has an unusually high concentration of Boron. Gives it kind of a nasty aftertaste, so bottled water is a popular business there.

Not sure if it would turn you into a moron by drinking it.

Actually, boron is listed by the EPA's ATSDR. Ingestion of chronic amounts of boron, such at those found at SuperFund and National Priority List sites, can seriously damage the gastrointestinal area. High enough doses, such as from industrial spills and dumping, can kill you

I avoid bottled water at all costs. It's nothing but glorified pricey tap water, with the additional risk of bacterial contamination and bisphenol/a.

If you really want "pure" water, purchase your own distiller. Their purchase price is typically made up within 3 years if you had purchased bottle water instead

Daughter came to louisiana from california in her suziki samari and she said it was burning a little oil and didn"t have the power it used to. This was in 95,drove it and checked it out. They had at Jiffy lube overfilled her crankcase by 3 qts, how she didn"t blow a seal is beyond me. Drained the extra out and the little machine started purring again. I use Jiffy lube on my old farm truck but I watch them like a hawk. By the way I have an 08 silver touring model, and love itl:D

You should have asked them how they got a sample of the transmission fluid .
See what they say, and tell them they're fu#$king liars. Ask them to show you.
Avoid Jiffy Lube at all costs. Nothing is wrong with going to the dealer, just don't let them rip you either. Tell them exactly the specific service you want, and nothing else. Especially not a "_XX.K mile service"

I took our minivan to Jiffy Lube for an oil change today. They are conveniently located a quarter mile from out house. We haven't lived here a year yet so I wasn't familiar with this station and was prepared to fend off all attempts of providing unnecessary and questionable services. I was pleasantly surprised when they pulled up my maintenance schedule, mentioned that a few things were due by the schedule, and didn't mention them again after I told them I would get them done elsewhere. The waiting room had TV monitors that showed a close-up of every car in the bay and you could see exactly what they were doing or not doing.

I still won't get my Prius serviced at the Jiffy Lube but it was just fine for the van.
