I am 47 years old and have had many cars over the years, but....., I have a wonderful, never before felt feeling in my gut tonight.

Tomorrow I will place my order for my first Prius and man, let me tell you, I am SO EXCITED!!! :whoo:

My internet sales manager told me their dealership is having a sharp spike in Prius sales. Another dealership in town called me telling me there is a 9 day supply of Prii in the US now because of recent demand. I guess I'm a bit suprised considering a new model will be available in '09.

Anyway, I heard a buyer can find out about his/her VIN# well before delivery. Is this true?

Since I'm so naive about owning this particular auto, I'd like to ask for advice about how to break-in a hybrid (e.g. no cruise control for 500 miles etc.), or any other sage wisdom about owning this car.

By the way, I will be ordering a Touring, pkg.#6 in Driftwood Pearl. The price is 26,945 + TTL or 28775 OTD. Perhaps I could have done a teensy bit better, but I really like the internet sales mgr. and dealership.

Oh yes.....I'd love to hear from you about your most significant modifications. If you had to suggest the one most important mod. you made, what is it?

    Thank you and best wishes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I ordered my Pri and waited nearly two weeks before finding out the VIN. The Pri was delivered to my dealer the next day. The first mod you will want to do is take off the plastic wheel covers and turn off the annoying reverse beep. After that find some protection for you hood. The hood dents very easily and scratches with just a fingernail. My two week old Pri looks like its been on a two year long road trip with a quarter size dent and many scratches on the front part of the hood. Again, look around and get some protection. I ordered the hood deflector from toyotapartsstore.com. You can also get a clear bra or the original leather/vinyl bra from various sources. For the third time do yourself a favor and get some protection for you hood.

First thing I would suggest is to adjust your tire pressures to 42 psi front and 40 psi in the rear. It is very important to your gas mileage.

These are some great suggestions and you can bet I'm paying attention.

    Please keep typing people :typing:

I think it's ironic Toyota puts the reverse beep sound inside the car. Since the Prius runs silently, I would think the beeps should be heard on the outside to warn pedestrians of the reverse gear engaged (just like a dumptruck).

The reverse beep is to inform the driver that the gear is in reverse, for the same reason that "forward creep" is also added onto the prius...

great your excited about your upcoming purchase, but dont just go by one dealer's word. My dealer told me the same thing, how they could not get them on the lot, or they only had so many on order for x amount of weeks, and that you would not get a better deal in las vegas. Well i called another dealer and they had 22 prius on the lot, and i saved 2200 bucks.

anyway about the vin#, use carfax(used prius?)

break in usually isnt a big deal anymore with modern car's, but take it easy for the first couple of thousand miles, no jack rabbit's or gunnin it. And try to avoid long travels(300+)miles if you can..but if you can't dont worry bout it. I would drop the oil in it at about 1500 mi though and replenish it with either synthetic or dino, of good quality, to dump any early metal shavings or other debris in the engine. This isnt particular to prius, but most cars..nothing new. Of course these are only thing's I have read online, and have no first hand or Oil analysis data to back up with..but i would imagine it couldnt hurt anything regardless.

    oh and have fun

Well my advice to a new owner would be to protect the paint with either wax or a paint protectant which isn't wax based, your choice. Don't wait for the first time the car needs washing, do it right away. Of course you should wash it first. Your car will sparkle and be much easier to keep clean. It will also be much less likely to have rust develop on any panels over its life. Wax the door reveals and door frames while your at it. Especially the first time.

Personally I would prefer to have my car bonnet repainted every 4 years than have a bra on it. Those black bras scratch the paint anyway. Just my opinion.

    Pat,

I notice you added a BT plate. What is this and what does it do?

Also, are you suggesting to wash the new car, then wax it or wax it immediately upon receiving it from the dealer (doesn't the dealer wash the car after the unloading from the car-carrier truck)?

After removing the reverse beep, perhaps you could turn off the boldness of your font so that we are not slammed with your replies. Nobody on Prius Chat types with the font that you are using. It feels like you are screaming at us.

Also, adding a sharkfin antenna will make your Prius unique on the streets (available right here in the PriusChat Shop for $74).

Welcome to Prius Chat and enjoy your new Baby....:bounce:

    My sincere apologies Ravenmaniac,

I thought the font looked kinda cool, but I am not the yelling type (pun intended).

In regards to the sharkfin antenna, I plan on this mod., however, have heard the reception does suffer. Someone suggested and addtional antenna that will fit under the sharkfin, but I can't find the thread I read this in anymore. What's your experience been with the sharkfin?

    Best wishes-

I signed my car's papers 2 weeks before I drove it off the lot, but I got a VIN# the minute I signed. If you're signing, I think you have every right to know exactly what you're signing for, not just the model and options, but the exact car that you're buying.

First mod for me was reverse beep. Probably the most satisfying mod though was the rear wiper lift mod that you can find on evnut.com if you dig into the Prius mods page. So simple!

The BT Tech Stiffening Plate is a chunky piece of metal that replaces a flimsy piece of metal. It stiffens the chassis a bit and makes highway driving more stable. You'll find lots of opinions about that here one way or the other, but that would be my first mod if I bought another Prius.

I got a Package #2 for $21,950 two days before the end of the quarter, March 30th., or about $2K below sticker. I worked exclusively with the Internet sales rep and got a confirmation number for the price, not the VIN.

When I showed up they were 'out' of package 2's, but had plenty of package 6, so I said 'bye' and call me when they come in. Two package 2's magically appeared in their system.

The number one thing is don't buy any add on such as extended warranty's, paint/fabric protection or pre paid service agreements. They can be bought later if needed and a substantial discount from what they charge. The finance weasel at the dealership tried to sell me the 7/100 warranty for $2200 that's $300 over MSRP, and $1200 over what can be bought on this board.

    Rep,
What do you mean "when I showed up"?

About the extended warranty, I'm in total agreement about avoiding dealer offers. The guy at my dealership came out from the back office and was stammering with prices for the extended warranties. It gave the impression he was feeling me out to see how much he could squeeze out of me.

I felt confident I could/should walk away from his offer and do better through Warranty Shack, which is the link Danny provides on this forum.

Here's a question....is Warranty Shack the same thing the dealer is selling and if not have you heard of anyone having a dealer not honor the Warranty Shack policy?

Don't know for certain, if warranty shack sells the same since I don't care about an extended, but there are links here that DO lead to toy dealers that sell the "official" TOY warranty for under a grand.

Major tip....do a forum search on warranty shack....ALMOST ALL of your questions have been answered before. I know, no fun, and no drama, but I find little success in reasking a question and a bit of satisfaction in ferreting out "previous answers in previous threads."

Anyway, lots of threads about it and people here tend to want you to do a bit of work yourself. As for me, with the Prius' top quality rep. and an already existing LOOOONg warranty on the hybrid system, I'm saving the cash for other fun.
