    Hi All

I posted a problem a few weeks ago where four codes came up, two of which were related to the engine not starting. I was directed to the TB EG011-03 which talks about tuning the car, and then possibly replacing the computer. But the numbers given to replace were 47030,47031,47050,and 47051. However my number is 47020. The Toyota agent says that this has not been superseded so if I replaced the computer it would have the same number.
Can anyone give me guidance on what the problem is. We have checked fuel preasure, and given the car a good tune.

    Thanks Bruce

    Hi Bruce,

Did you clean the throttle body interior and throttle plate?

I tried looking up 89661-47020 and was not able to locate that part number in the parts database of the Toyota dealer that I buy parts from. Maybe a different engine ECU is installed in your part of the world.

The older revision engine ECUs did not allow as much time for the engine to start before logging a DTC. The current revision ECU allows more time.

Thanks for that Patrick, I will ask the mechanic who is working on it if he has done this yet. I asked the Toyota dealer here about the 47054 and he said he would need to get it from Japan at a cost of $2366.00 while he has a 47020 in stock for $2316.00. I asked in Japan about the 47054 and they said all they could do was a 47020.
This problem has mainly been mentioned for the 2001 to2003 models does it include the 2000 model, I'm thinking maybe mine is the slightly earlier one. Also if I put a 47054 into mine would it be compatible.

    Ta - Bruce

    Hi Bruce,

If your car is an NHW10 (sold only in Japan up to the 2000 model year) instead of an NHW11, who knows what the compatibility of the engine ECU is with newer versions. Is your car a Japan domestic market vehicle?

What is the chassis number of your car? You can see this by opening the hood, looking at the black plastic cowl that runs along the rear of the engine compartment, and removing the access door that hides the VIN.

Instead of replacing the engine ECU for such a large amount of money, I suggest living with the problem. BTW the price of a new engine ECU in the US is ~US$1,000.

    Hi Patrick

It is a nhw11, hese came out in 2000 in Japan and that is where I have imported this 2001 from. The nhw10 was only meant for the Japanese market but a number of these have been imported into New Zealand, with not so good results. Maybe the Japanese produced the NHW11 for a year before offering them for export.
So as it is a NHW11 will the 47054 computer be compatible?

    regards

    Bruce

    Hi Bruce,

I am concerned because your engine ECU part number is not listed in TSB EG011-03. So I can't guarantee that your car will work with engine ECU 89661-47054.

Here is a link to a Houston, Texas Toyota dealer's price of US$761 for that part: http://preview.tinyurl.com/by3ff

I don't know whether they will ship outside the US.

Since you have contacts in Japan, can you inquire whether a TSB exists there which is analogous to the US TSB EG011-03?

If you are inclined to purchase 89661-47054 lacking official confirmation, I suggest one other check: visit the techinfo.toyota.com website and download the repair manual info for the 2001 model year that shows pinouts for the engine ECU. You probably will find this when browsing through the diagnostic codes relating to the engine. Compare the wiring harness connectors shown in the repair manual to the engine ECU wiring harness connectors on your vehicle. If they are exactly the same, that improves the chance that the new engine ECU will function.

Also, have you checked your engine oil to make sure that the viscosity is 5W-30 and that the oil level does not exceed the top dimple on the dipstick?
