Updating the GPS Nav system

    Just out curiosity I went in to my dealership to ask about updates to my 2008 Navigational system. I have noticed that after driving it around a bit there are several streets that are either not there (like the street we live on) or they are way off. It's not many, but it is a little disconcerting. My dealer said yes there is an update, but it costs over $300. I told him that is almost the cost of the nav system option. Then he said that it does not include a lot of new information. I tried to keep my hairy kiniption inside and just said thanks. But before I left I asked him who the manufacturer was. He told me Denon, but I ran into a brick wall when I Googled it. Does anyone know who makes the nav system for The Prius? I was wondering if there was a way to download the updates a little cheaper, you know, like my PC (belch).

    The manufacturer is DENSO Corporation.

    And, NO, you cannot just download updates (as with "normal" after-market GPS units. :( You will need to purchase a new DVD disc. Non-E-Bay price: about $225 -> 250. :mad:

    Nope. the Nav system is my biggest disappointment with the Prius. I wish I'd saved the money and just bought a new Garmin (or just getting a map update for my old StreetPilot 2620). Just drove from NY to MA and, with map version 6.1, it failed with all 5 name/category searches I tried (it's only passably useful when doing a search by street). I must have driven an extra 20 miles looking for things it claimed were there but weren't.

    And aside from the really overpriced dealer updates, there's no way to update the data (aside from finding a disk on eBay).

    Here's a critique of the NAV system I put together a while back; I ought to update it.
