    Hello all,

I've been trolling the boards for the last month or two (and CleanMPG.com as well) and finally decided to sign up because I finally picked up my 2008 Prius today. Unfortunately, it's in black so maintaining it will be a pain. Anyway, my current concern right now is picking on the Canadians on this board about rustproofing the Prius. Any recommendations/tips/suggestions about how to go about that? Thanks-in-advance.

    Welcome to the forum!

Did you buy your 2008 Prius in Canada or did you import it from the USA?

"Been there done that" We have two and I have made various
inquiries about rust proofing .. I got a number of answers none very satisfactory. The "Rust proffers" obviously were ready to do the cars but
Toyota apparently frown on such things.

There is a local Toyota dealership that has a "RustStop" franchise so I called them . The service manager told me that they had never done a Prius but have done other Toyota's ...

So if you get a definitive answer .. please let me know !!

hello and welcome! (I'm currently in the city next to you lol)

I don't know if anyone's done rustproofing. You can ask Sarge. He's from Toronto. Mark derail is from Québec (I forget which city).

I'm from Cobourg Ontario and I have just driven my 2008 Prius through it's first winter. No concerns with rust, but was a bit troubled when driving in really deep snow. Not that easy. You can't "rock" the Prius like you can a regular car, especially like one with standard transmission. However, I did not get stuck but I also avoided driving in ridiculously deep snow. I stayed home and read a book instead.

    Hey fellas,

Thanks for the welcome. Greatly appreciated. To answer this question:

...I'd have to say I bought mine in Canada, and did not import the vehicle from the US.

Anyway, I went out for a full day today getting to know the car a bit more and I averaged 3.4l/100km doing 100% city driving. I did some errands and actually did a mock trial run of my route to work and back. Thanks for answering my question about rustproofing. I guess no one has really done it up here. The dealer was trying to gouge me with their "version" of rustproofing, and I didn't give in this time around ( I learned my lesson with my Honda).

My question now is, I'm assuming some of you guys (if not all of you Canucks) are running 195/55/16 tires, right? The Bridgestone Turanza tires that came with my car is saying it's got a max rating of 51 psi. Has anyone done this? I bumped mine this morning to 45/45psi. Thanks-in-advance. :)

    Hey Buck,

How much salt did Cobourg get during this past winter? I think that plays a major factor here because since Mississauga is more densely populated we probably have triple the amount of salt "intake." I'll see how it goes this coming winter. I won't be driving the Prii on the highway, so that might be enough deterrent right there...I hope :pray2:

Glad to see another Prius in the GTA, I picked mine up last Monday and i'm loving it so far.

We need an "Ontario" local forum so we can all hook up.

Hi welcome to PC and congrats on your new car. I service my car @ Erin Park Toyota in Mississauga and they didn't give me a definite answer on having to do it nor has anyone else from any other Toyota location. Since Rustproofing is a big moneymaker I feel confident that it's not needed if they don't push it. I had my previous cars rustproofed at Rustcheck but my research came up with warnings of having the Prius done there. They spray between the panels and was warned that it may interfere with some of the electronics. Not sure how much truth is there to this but I decided not to have it done.
Wash your car regularly and thoroughly including in the winter.

I see more and more Prii in this area. The other day there were three of us driving in a row Dixie and QEW.

When I bought my Prius, the finance guy specifically said my car didn't need the rust proofing - so he didn't try to sell it to me .. he did try and get me to get the fabric protection and paint protection - I declined.

    3.4.. wow nice!

nope. Only 2008 models have the 16" tyres. The rest of us have 185/65R15 on GY Integrity (max 44PSI). I ran mine at 40/38.

Keep the front 2PSI higher so run 47/45 or 45/43.

Also, where the heck are you guys?

Since I landed, I've only seen 2 TCHs and a handful of Priuses (one house near Downtown Oakville had 2!! One silver, one Driftwood).

    Hey Tideland,

I work at QEW & Winston Churchill (in the "space ship" bldg) can't miss it from the HWY. Drive to/from home from SW end of TO on the Lake Shore / QEW / North and South Service roads to and from work. Are you in Oakville? There are a lot more Prii around here than a year ago when I bought mine. OH Happy Birthday - my Prius is one year old. I have to buy a present ...

Hey pushing it doesn't count LOL! All kidding aside Echelon those are great numbers; especially for a car just off the lot. What kind of driving are you doing? You obviously have your tire pressure way up.

Good on you - keep up the great MPG.

Re: Hello from Canada...Salt in Cobourg

We got a lot of snow this year, but I don't think a lot of salt, but I didn't really notice all that much. We also spent a couple weeks in Florida. We drove down on our snow tires too! I typically get better gas mileage on US gas for some reason and my best was 656 Km for $24 US going through Botkins Ohio. One thing I like about Toyota, at least our dealer, is that I can get a free hand wash every Saturday for my Prius. I really dig my car.

Yes, I was told the same thing. Something about spraying into areas where it might block an air passageway or whatever. My dealer is Mississauga Toyota. I initially was planning to go to Erin Park because it's the closest dealer, but someone hung up on me while I was put on hold. So, that was the end of that.

The fabric & paint protection are both bogus. They wear out in a matter of weeks when they are suppose to last a year. Needless to say I do my own detailing to keep the car in decent shape.

Well, I got black with 16" tires in Mississauga. I'm very easy to spot. :) Oddly enough, I am seeing more and more Priis out there, but mostly people in their 40s and 50s.
