Fm radio plays so little music these days, I had gotten away from listening and had gone to talk radio completely the last few years. That's all over now.
Since my Sirius radio install, I have rediscoved the enjoyment of listening to music. I've found my perfect audio adjustments to the stock JBL radio, and have even become quite impressed with it. (used to hurt my ears, and another reason I stopped listening to music.)
After much thought I've decided to go for this configuration to add bass to my stock JBL system.
This 12" sub enclosure is a thin "truck" application, that fits perfectly in the hatch area, behind the right rear seat, facing aft, and extends exactly to the edge of the foldable/removable floor. Like a custom fit, it has little impact on cargo area and matches the interior quite nicely.

It'll be Powered by this 300W amp. installed in the covered tray under the hatch floor.
The install is about as basic as a bazooka.

I'll post pics of the install soon.

Looking forward to your pics. Just traded my 04 Civic Hybrid for an 06 Prius. Had a nice audio system in the Civic, 10" Alpine sub and class D amp. Pioneer head with Bluetooth. Focal polyglass separates.

Can't wait to gut the JBL...just terrible sound.

Love the ride though, she's a beauty :)

Here it is. Sorry it took so long to get some pics here.
This set-up sounds absolutely awesome. I am 100% satisfied with my stock JBL system now.
Radio is adjusted to neutral trebel, neutral mid, -1 bass.
I have a remote bass adjustment for sub mounted on side of center console.
    Totally transformed system.
I connected a line-level converter to the rear speaker outputs from the JBL amp. connected RCA patch cord from that to amp, and sub to amp. Amp is connected to battery. All wiring runs under hatch tray, via cutouts I made in the ribbing. trays sits in hatch like stock.
This is slim-line "truck" sub, and fits on rear portion of hatch deck, and under sunshade curtain. Almost like a custom enclosure, it fits perfect and allows full functionality of hatch features.
It's a 10" sub. They make a 12" but discovered it's too tall to fit under the sunshade pull-curtain. So went with 10". It will turn heads and hit hard if you crank it up.

$300 for lower quality equipment to about $600 for something a bit nicer including wiring. In your case add about $40 for a line level converter with remote turn on module built in.

You can pull the signal for the amp from the rear speaker with a line converter. :)

OKay been looking at this kicker speaker did it come with that grill? The ones I have found on ebay dont have a grill. How does this speaker compare to the Kicker S10L5 solobaric 10" its only about $20 more just wondering if it was worth it? I have also been wondering dont amps have two outputs or can you just use one output to power sub? Also do most amps have a crossover built in? Sorry for so many questions..But thanks for the quick answers..:) I am old school used to have ORION amps how does this kicker amp compare to the old ORION's?

    • I'm not a fan of Kicker products so I cannot comment on the comparison you asked for. I shy away from the stuff you usually find on eBay or questionable internet retailers. :(
    • For a subwoofer system you can get away with using only a single left or right channel signal due to the fact that the majority of sub-bass output is mono and you generally do not have any issues with reduced volume due to signal summing. Here is a product you could use which includes a remote turn on module required to have your amp turn off and on with the stereo: Peripheral SVENR. Here is a .pdf that shows how you would wire it up to an existing factory speaker to obtain the required signal for your amp. Instructions.
    • Most amplifiers now have a decent built-in crossover.
Definately purchase a subwoofer that allows you to install a grille. I kick myself all the time for not having grilles on mine and now I have a couple chips in the paint on my expensive sub. :(

    9G-Man,

That is a clean install and I like how you chose a box that fit so nicely in there. :)

I did the install myself. Pretty straightforward, except the way I chose to "tunnel" the wires through the waffle structure of the tray underside, so the tray would sit steady as stock.
The amp is a single channel, mono, amp. It has left and right inputs, one output.
Outstanding bass for a slimline sub. The S10L5 Solobaric is a large SUB-woofer that would require a considerably sized enclosure, and would take up most of the hatch space. Didn't want anything like that.

I've got about $400.oo into it, including Amp, Sub, LOC, grill and wiring.
Worth every dollar, I can't believe how it transformed the stock system.
Another plus is how nicely it matches my interior. And most of all, my new Sub is not shut-away inside the cargo enclosure, where it couldn't move the air.
I've got the stock center speaker disconnected, fader centered, treble 0, mid 0 or -1, bass -1. Amp bass gain is adjusted by remote I mounted on center console.

The most unexpected thing of all is I am aquiring a taste for rap and hip-hop as a result of this thing.....Can't appreciate that stuff without a sub.

If you don't have the JBL set-up, just tap the rear speakers at the doors, or behind the radio.
