Computer Chip for Elec. Only?

    I ran across an ad for a computer chip that converts the Prius to electric only up to 34 mph. I can come pretty close to 30 mph if I feather the pedal, and only if I don't need a burst of power. From what I'm getting from the ad is this chip prevents the gas engine from kicking in until you hit 34 mph (regardless of how hard you accelerate).

    My first thought was of increase fuel economy; but my second thoughts were of times when I need a burst of power ... would the elec. motor (only) get me into a fast merging lane? Other second thoughts were to wonder if this is just a rip off.

    Anyway... here's some text from the ad. Has anyone heard of this gadget, tried it, and have any feedback?

    I'll leave this simple and say... No.

    the system is not designed to work with extreme acceleration up to 34mph...

    For free, you can wire in the EV switch and take your time getting to 35..

    The North American Prius doesn't need a computer chip for EV. The car's computer already has everything it needs except a switch. Such a switch has its uses, but fast acceleration is not one of them, as CobraKid has suggested.

    After a brief Google search (you might consider providing links in your posts) I found the site that seems to be what you referenced. Their pic is the same as that on Coastal's site. Makes me think they're just reselling the Coastal switch (with a sizeable markup), the pros and cons for which have been discussed in depth in other threads.

    OK, thanks all, for the responses. I'm new, and wasn't sure it was allowed to include a commercial link, but it IS the same gimmick you all seem to be referencing. I think I'll leave well enough alone. I've only got 400 miles on my new Prius, so I am not anxious to start modifying anything... just curious.
