Gun ownership isn't a determinant of crime as much as poverty & fear are.

Canada has a higher percentage of people w/ guns than the good ol' U.S., but they have far less gun crime.

As much as the world has been conditioned to hate Michael Moore... his film "Bowling for Columbine" really shows how fear-crazed America is.
I travel the world myself, and nowhere that I've been are the people as fearful as they are here. And also nowhere else is the news as sensational as it is here.
We really need to break free of whatever trance we're living in, and soon.

Bowling for Columbine showed me how much of a piece of crap that Moore is.

And you are correct. Lawful gun ownership does not increase crime. Pieces of crap that rob kill and rape do. Wonder why the Brits had to ban samurai swords? No guns and the bad guys decided to use something else. Criminals will commit crimes, and not care much about weapons bans.

    Typical conditioned response.

    But why?

First off, he's an NRA supporter.
And in all honesty, the film wasn't "anti-gun" at all.
It really showed just how insane we are as a society though.

I loved the part where he showed newscasts from around the world, and how ours are entirely A.D.D. & fear-based.

Even CNN has "CNN World", which has much more intelligent journalism, and then of course they have the dumbed-down Americanized version for us.
    Very silly, imo.

    And btw, you're a self-proclaimed "gun nut".

    Ever wonder why?
Do you feel powerless & the firearms give you a sense or control?

Is it for the feeling of security?

    Just wondering.

I can appreciate a gun as much as the next guy, and I'm not a horrible shot w/ a rifle, but I'm always curious about people that kinda take it to an obsessed level.

    You are kidding, right?

Moore's connection to the NRA is specious at best. He told Tim Russert that he joined the group so that he could be elected its president and make it support gun control. This is as ludicrious as someone like Barbra Streisand announcing that she was becoming Catholic so that she could be elected Pope and make the Church support abortion.

Moore is no friend of the NRA. His pearl harbor job on Heston was enough for me.
Bowling is an entertaining work of fiction, but by any standards the lies it purports as facts are enough to make a gun owner sick.

I like guns. I like quality precision made high speed hole punches. I like hunting for my family, I like not having to rely on the 1/2 an hr response time of police in my area. I like owning a 60 year old rifle that was in the hands of a Soviet defender on the eastern front.

Sometimes I like dressing up like a cowboy and shooting steel plates with other friends.

I like competing in long range shoots to try to hit paper at 300-500 yards.

Yes I like protecting myself and my family. But I also like trap shooting.

Please do not try to find a psychological issue as to why I like firearms any more than a person likes black and white films or martial arts.

I profess the "gun nut" part so as to put my cards on the table. I am who I am and do not represent myself as anything else.

Perhaps I should put "ice cream nut" on my profile. When I eat it I feel in control and powerful, and it gives me a feeling of security. But, I'm not obsessed, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not! :nono:

Nah, I'm just calling out what is already visible in this thread and is always brought up anytime this type of topic is posted. :)

The extremists or "right-wing nuts", cowboys, or ex-military guys/girls always like to try and assume moral superiority, or maximum masculinity over the "liberal" crowd and I love to shoot em down and remind them of how stupid their stance really is. I realize this doesn't include all of the people in the above mentioned categories but close enough to stereotype. lol

It could also be said for left wing nuts to assume intellectual superiority and to lambast right wing folks as extremists cowboys, or simplistic.

It is not an arguement either us is going to gain any ground on. We will disagree and are not likely to change.

I thought liberals were all about choice and tolerance?! Once a Marine, always a Marine. No "ex" about it. Perhaps you weren't speaking to me in particular, but as far as Marines are concerned the proper terminology is "former Marine."

Now if you're talking the "Love Potion" flavor from Baskin Robbins I do become sad when the Valentine's Day (it's only available that time of year) supply of that runs out! My local Baskin Robbins owner always orders extra so as to prolong the season. I love him...

I'm an oddball liberal if I can even be classed as such. I grew up poor white trash to drug addict parents and in the bad areas of town where white kids were not cool. lol I once stole a bicycle from a police impound yard so that the punks on the corner couldn't catch me when I came home at night. On the otherhand I don't readily identify with the stereotypical hippy types because they are often as uneducated as any other extremist.

I'm familiar with Marines. My brother is 6yrs in now and one of my good friends left for camp a year after. You should see the discussions we get into. Hahaha

As for Baskin Robbins, I have not been there in ages but if it's that good I know where I'll be on Valentines Day. ;) Thanks!

By "oddball" liberal do you mean you are NOT for choice and tolerance? JK!

If you didn't already, now you know not to say ex-Marine. Someone once took me to task for calling a Marine a "jarhead". They thought I was a civilian disparaging the Corps. I quickly informed them I was a former Marine and married to one still in service so the term was meant in all love. It's kind of like calling your brother a name, and it's OK, but if someone outside the family calls him a name, why, them's fightin' words!

Definitely be there for Valentine's! ;)
