I just logged into directv.com and set my DVR to record the CBS Early show tomorrow that way I don't forget.
Folks, you just have to follow this on Prius - Chicago to New York on a single tank Wayne's Progress - CleanMPG Forums This may sound a little mellow dramatic, but it has the flavor of Neil Armstrong landing on the moon. In fact, it may have more immediate and practical ramifications for the USofA. :usa2: Run, do not walk to CleanMPG.com! As my grandmother would say, "Go it boy, go it!" :cheer2:
This last work is that he has about 100 miles to go and he just got down to 1 PIP. Do you think he is going to make it? Here is the link
bestmapman, How did you generate the elevation profiles that you posted into the thread? Of course I think he'll make it. But I don't know the routes he's taking. It may come down to playing it safe and going out of his way to take the George Washington Bridge, or going through the Holland or Lincoln Tunnels and gliding to a stop at the botom of the down slope. I sincerely hope not. If he gets past half way in a tunnel he's technically "in New York." Would that count? Ditto on the GWB, but then he could no-arrows/regen glide down onto Manhattan Island; home free!
I got word from him that he is pulling off to wait for the film crew and he can see the skyline of New York. He has two PIPs left. I guess I heard wrong last time when I said 1 PIP. His average for the trip is 70.5 on the MFD.
Is there a log showing the miles travelled per segment as well as the actual road time or speed? I did a rough estimate for CHI to Youngstown OH and got ~45 mph but the chart doesn't report breaks. I can use Google and Mapquest to reverse engineer some of the data but I was wondering if there is a quantitative trip log? My interest is to cross check my MPG vs MPH chart. Thanks, Bob Wilson
I saw Wayne this morning on CBS - apparently he made it, averaging over 70 mpg, I believe. His trip took 3 hours longer than the CBS-driven Prius with him. I would hope that viewers would be impressed that the 2nd car filled up once & got about 45 mpg "just driving it".
I'm an optimist and even I doubt it. I'm guessing that most people would estimate their personal time at a value above $25/hr. They would therefore estimate those three hours as being worth $75. The fill-up - and the amount consumed - probably cost less than $40. I'm confident that whatever argument you throw at the average person, they will have a way to justify their point of view.
Mind offering some facts? Cutting the engine at intersections more than 10 seconds...endorsed by the Canadian govt - legal in US - it's hypermiling so don't do it? Don't charge to the light - it's hypermiling? Don't do warp stealth - it's hypermiling? The typical US driver could save 20-30% just by cutting aggressive driving and adopt just a few hypermiling techniuques without taking extra time or being legally questionable. In contrast, I know of a very defensive Highlander Hybrid driver that gets 19.8mpg - you have to work to get that low! Sort of defeats the purpose of sustainablity and emissions if drivers have heavy right foot? Opps - I forgot your loathing of Wayne Gerdes, so I will let you return to reading about all the traffic accidents in Minnapolis....probably all caused by hypermilers.
There seems to be a little confusion in the reporting: 800 miles distance 8.9 gallons flashed on screen 71 MPG reported for trip The problem is:800 miles / 8.9 gallons -> 90.0 MPG 800 miles / 71 MPG -> 11.3 gallons Anyone know where the 8.9 gallons came from? Would this be another case of the variable size, Prius fuel tank? Bob Wilson
Only in San Fransisco where there is medical marijuana Maybe you could ask the "Doc" for a prescription. How about it Evan?arty:
I think Wayne over filled the tank when he started out so he could have a little more gas. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Why don't you watch the video...Oh - you're feelings for Wayne, so I'll do a synoysis. Use the least amount of brakes - glide Use the least amount of accleration Be aware of the dash, the traffic in front and behind you Don't charge to red lights, etc. The CBS reporter took 14 hours from Chi to NYC at 45mpg - Wayne took 17 hours at 71mpg. On a sub 20-mile commute that most of us do daily, not but about a minute longer if that. John, I recall you stressed low emissions - Wayne was emitting 60% less than the "normal" driver ... why does it being Wayne negate that?
Just so everyone realizes...this isn't about proving anything about the Prius. It is about demonstrating the effects of driving techniques. They could have just as easily used Tahoes, or neons instead.
CARBON emissions are not related to the SMOG type. There is no direct relation to MPG when it comes to NOx levels. Improvement to *BOTH* types has always been my goal, not just one or the other. .
Are you going to embarrass your self saying that reporter getting 45mpg was greener than Wayne getting 71mpg? It was in identical Prius...both were even silver. Just in case you mention time to warm up the ICE and catayltic converter, that was very negligible on a 700 mile trip on the freeway that was more than made up for. Less gas consumed = less greenhouse gases.
Well, he's got to get back to Chicago somehow. I wonder what he can do with a conventional Tahoe. . .
