So I just filled up my 08 Prius for the first time this weekend.

I was able to manage a 5.0 L/100km average (approx 47 MPG). Which I think is pretty decent considering I am a Prius newb, Toronto traffic sucks, and that the first however many miles was put on by the dealer. Needless to say I was fighting to get the average down from the way I received it the entire time.

I picked up the Prius last Saturday with a full tank of gas provided by the dealership. Of course, I really have no idea how much gas was actually pumped in. What I do know, is that the first Pip on the fuel gauge gave me approx 150km (93 miles for the yanks). I ended up only getting about 700km before the last Pip started blinking. With my 5.0 average, I thought for sure I'd be seeing well over 800km. Now, when I filled the tank, the pump stopped at 32 litres (about 8.5 US gallons). I did a big newb thing and pumped in more until I got to about 42 litres (11 US gallons). I had a bit of overflow...nothing too crazy though.

Anyhow..I'm curious if anyone can tell me which of the following is correct for my situation:

    - The computer is wrong and the 5.0 L/100km isn't realistic
    - The car wasn't filled up nearly enough from the dealership
    - It's just the engine breaking in

I'm now on my 2nd tank, and being a somewhat smarter Prius driver, am averaging 4.8 L/100km very early on. I expect that average to get much better.

I have a similar situation but no questions.

After having owned it for a bit over 3 weeks, I drove it till the 2nd pip showed up, then I drove a couple miles more to the gas station for my first fillup.

You got approx 47mpg, I got 46.4mpg. (Close)
    You got 700km (435miles), I got 586km (364miles). (Close)
You said your first pip gave 93 miles, since I went a pip less, I should add 364+93 which equals 457 miles. (Close)
You added 8.5 US gallons, my pump auto clicked off at 7.82 gallons. (Close)
You pumped in an additional 2.5 gallons, I re-hooked the pump handle and twisted the gas cap shut.
So for a first tank for each of us, it seems normal to me.

    Although...

There are 10 pips on the gas level display. If you get approx 150km for each pip, then you'd get 1,500km or 932 miles which we know is unreasonable except to a hypermiler.

I'm thinking along the lines of, increased driver skill, gas bladder expansion experience, vehicle break-in period and a host of other factors that will translate into better mileage, but on the first handful of refills, I don't think anything during that break-in time will set a precedent.

I think it's working as intended.

True. You have no idea exactly how much was in the tank. If you ran 93 miles on the first pip, though, it is clear you had very close to a full tank. When I am running well, I do not get more than about 120 miles on the first pip. (This would be on a 55MPG+ tank.)

Definite Newbie activity. Read up more about this on PC. I suggest you allow the pump to go on the lowest auto setting. I do this. When it clicks off, I run it manually until the first click and then close the pump.

Correct? None of the above. (1) The computer is not wrong. It may not be perfect, but it is very good.

    (2) From what you said earlier, it looks as though the dealer came very close to a complete fill.

    (3) The engine breaking in is not going to have anything to do with how much gas you can fit in the tank. Seriously, the break-in period for seeing an increase in mileage is more than you’ll experience in a few tanks of gas.

Don’t worry. Learn about the car. Enjoy it. Drive it and have fun. But – always keep track of your mileage, your gas purchases and the readings on your MFD. I suggest resetting at each fill-up and recording the following: Date, outside temp, gallons purchased, purchase price, location/brand of fuel, odometer reading, MFD mileage (MPGs) and MFD distance.

I suggest you read a few of the threads on this topic. One older thread that just received some new life is this one: mpg variance between actual and computer.

I get between 75 and 130 miles before my first pip disappears. This is dependent on the time of the year it is because of the fuel bladder. 75 in the winter time since it's colder, and about 130 in the summer time (in AZ) because it will stretch more. Sounds like you got right in between there somewhere.... because of this I'd say your tank was pretty much full.
