We're taking an overseas contract for two years. . .the question is do we sell our 2006 Prius (30k miles) or store it. If we sell now, we'll just incur the higher cost to buy a new one when we come back. If we store, are there problems associated with the car sitting idle for two years that could potentially be expensive. What do we do? I need a Prius/battery hybrid expert to help me weigh the pro and cons. Thanks

Do you have any trusted friends or relatives that could drive it once per week and not put a bunch of miles on it? Frankly, I would sell it. In two years, there will be plug in Prius. People are hungry for used Prius with only 30,000 miles and you might be able to sell it for nearly 20K

DH has never seen a 2g prius parked for 2 years himself, but has heard of them jumpstarting just fine after extended storage.

with gas prices climbing, values are pretty good right now. might as well sell while the sellin's good. no matter how you slice it, storing the car will cost you money.

Toyota will eventually ramp up production to meet demand. And they are determined to lower the cost of their hybrid components. Gas prices have spiked, and even if they stay where they are, the sticker shock will eventually subside as people adjust their driving habits and realize that the loss they take on trading in their gas guzzler will be more expensive than paying the higher gas prices. Also, in 2 years there will be more competition from the other auto makers.

In other words, prices are probably at their peak. Advice: Sell it and and buy again in 2 years.

IMO, Sell it. Take advantage of the current shortage and hysteria and sell somewhere where there are long waiting lists.

Perhaps you could "ask" for $1k less than current retail price for an 08 equivalent. Anyway I think you might be able to sell it quick if price it decently. What part of the US are you in ?

With a decent payback you'll be all set to order whatever is latest and greatest in 2010.

On the environmental side, somebody driving that Prius for 2 years is better than having it sit for 2 years while the would be new owners drive something more polluting.

Sell it now. Take advantage of the current panic and short supply.
