Anybody else notice these despicable ads? They are particularly prevalent in magazines and are boldly and falsely touting how green and environmentally friendly their cars are. A recent ad was touting seven gas friendly vehicles, including the Tahoe Hybrid, Malibu Hybrid and the Chevy Volt (plus some E85 vehicles – good luck finding an E85 station!). But then in tiny fine print they have a disclaimer stating that:

“Tahoe Hybrid at participating dealers only.”
    “Malibu Hybrid very limited availability.”
“Concept Chevy Volt not available for sale.”

This same hyperbole and disclaimers can be found on their site:

There's a ton if ignorant saps out there still, that believe gas prices are a big conspiracy, that's theres still decades before we run low, etc. So, believing that, prices will certainly drop back under $2 a gallon. That allows them to buy the giant land barges ... especially now that they're so smog free. (shaking head)

LOL, there it is, right off the site

1 Based on EPA estimates and segmentation.
    2 E85 is 85% ethanol, 15% gasoline.
3 Tahoe Hybrid at participating dealers only. Malibu Hybrid very limited availability.
4 Concept Chevy Volt not available for sale. ©2008 GM Corp. Buckle up, America!

    The claim from Chevy:

The disclaimer at the bottom of their ads:

They are basing their ads still on the well working slogan:
Every morning an idiot will wake up.

OMG, I always yell at my TV every time one of these obnoxious ads comes on the television... Aren't there some truth in advertising laws that apply to these types of shenanigans?

Nope but I think I've seen an Aura Hybrid if I recall correctly.

Very sick of it. Even more sad that people believe it. The exclusive use of highway mileage drives me crazy. Clearly has no motive other than to try and mislead people.

Aveo: Made by Daewoo in Korea. Good thing you're buying American. Too bad its mileage is 4-5 mpg worse than the similarly sized Fit and Yaris. Its actually worse than the new larger Cobalt XFE too.

Cobalt XFE: 36 mpg highway! Better than any other compact! Too bad its rated as a subcompact and smaller than the compacts too. On top of that its city is only 25, so you only get 29mpg combined, same as the considerably larger Corolla or Civic, not as good as the similarly sized Yaris, Fit etc.

Malibu: Mileage is just as good as the Accord and Camry! Of course the Accord is a Large car and the Malibu is a midsize. Its barely a midsize though, as its half way between the Corolla and Camry.

Malibu Hybrid: Don't even get me started. 25->27mpg improvement, vs. 25->34mpg on the Camry to Camry Hybrid. All that and its almost as big as the Prius!

GM is putting out far more Aura hybrids under the Saturn brand. I saw three at the local lot. They also had the Vue hybrid as well, at least two of those. They were priced reasonably and while they don't compare to the Prius they do compare to the Camry hybrid.

I would pick the Prius first, the Camry hybrid second but the Aura hybrid is an option I would recomend to a highway commuter who wanted a mid sized American branded car.

miscrms, the Cobalt is a compact car and is sized like one. It is definitely not a subcompact.

I've actually seen some billboards where instead of posting city/hwy, they actually put hwy/city!!

Tideland. The Cobalt is indeed classified as a subcompact by the EPA in the 2008 Fuel Economy Guide
The one I sat in definitely felt like a very small car and seemed claustrophobic and closed in, at least to me.

I had the same feeling the other day in Virginia, I was listening to a local radio station and the local DJ who probably gets a fat check from GM was throwing high praises to the new Chevy Tahoe, saying the local dealer had "hooked him up" with a new Chevy Tahoe Hybrid that is on the forefront of GM's technology that will make us independent from foreign oil... I almost puked listening to that garbage.

These ads are certainly targeting the average consumer who drives pick up trucks and for them any fuel economy improvement is a godsend...

Yesterday we drove our Prius over the Appalachians from Virginia to West Virginia and in pretty much every little mountain hamlet all we saw were trucks, many of them older models, I can see how those poor people must be hurting badly with the current gas prices. Those people definitely can't afford a new hybrid truck and their lives many times depend of those trucks. Sad times.

The ads where the "flim-flam man" is patiently explaining how green GM is to a group of young children is particularly loathesome. He mocks "teensy-weensy" hybrids as he points to the wonderfully green Tahoe hybrid.

"Never give a sucker an even break" is GM's new motto.

Every Sunday there's a multi-page "special advertisement section" in the Chicago Tribune. Full color and thick. Nothing but GM propaganda but written in such a way that the casual reader would think they are regular articles.

Public relations over substance has always been Chevy's MO. I remember when reliable, high mpg Japanese cars were first gaining significant market share in this country. I saw an article in the business section of a newspaper: Chevy had a response to the Japanese! What was this response, you might ask? Build more reliable vehicles? Get real! Improve the gas milage of their guzzlers? Yer dreamin'. Technical innovation? You're kidding, right? No, there response was an advertising campaign featuring Disney characters! Yes, that's right, Disney characters! And we haven't seen a Japanese car on these shores since!
