Sell my parking space to a republican?

Okay, so I work in Downtown Saint Paul, and I have a parking space about three short blocks from the Xcel Energy center where the 2008 Republican National Convention is going to take place. It sounds like I'm going to want to work from home that week and so I'm wondering: what should I do with my parking space? Try to rent it out to someone attending the convention? (Perhaps list it on eBay?) What do you think this space would be worth? Or should I keep my space so I can attend the protests? Here's a map that indicates where the Victory ramp is, where I park. Victory Parking

    Thanks!

First decide whether or not you want to attend the protests. If so decide whether it would be easier to take the bus than fight the traffic. Only you yourself can make such decisions. Then find out whether there is actually a market for parking spaces such as yours. You might check eBay or Craigslist to see if people are offering parking spaces, and if so, what they are selling for. You might even phone the local Republican convention organizers and ask whether Republicans are interested in renting a parking space, and if so, what they are offering. (Not that you'd accept a first offer, but it would tell you what the starting offer is.) Is there generally a market for private parking spaces during large conventions? Or do the convention centers have adequate parking?

Remember, if you rent it to a Republican, they support terrorists trying to kill you, and you should at least rent it for the amount of debt they added to you in 8 years. :D

Leave the parking space empty, except for a barrel of burning toxic chemicals with an Elect John McCain poster on it.

Anything you do will definately lead to a republican defeat in the fall, so just do 'anything'!!

Or just fill the space with Democratic signs, Republicans will have to drive by or walk by it every day.

Or sell the space to a Republican and donate the money to a candidate you like.

Wow, all the hatred. I would have thought all the democrats would be giddy getting to decide for either a communist, socialist, or liberal in the general election. Of course, hopefully we'll know soon if its the communist or socialist vs. the liberal.

So there will be protesters at the convention? I amazed they are protesting our great republic system of government elections in action. They must be for the communist.

You are right. 3 Turds in the puchbowl and what side do we drink from?

Let me give 3 seconds of thought to the original question. Do I rent to a republican who is here for the convention, has a wallet full of cash looking for a good parking spot or some punk wearing a bandana over his face looking to cause trouble? hmmm. On the plus side the punk could get arrested leaving his car in your spot until he is released.

If you decide against renting it out, how will you protect your space from a Republican just parking in it anyway without paying? You could drive all the way there and find some Republican is parked in your space without your permission.

I have a parking contract at a ramp. So I don't literally have a space with my name on it out on the street somewhere. They generally fill the ramp nearly full and leave enough spaces open for contact parkers (we're guaranteed a space). But if I don't park, they will end up letting in one more cash parker that day and they'll probably be charging quite a bit. (So I want my piece of that pie.)

Does your parking contract allow you to rent your space? Is it a pass on your rear-view mirror that you could give to someone else to use? (And if so, what happens if he does not return it?)

When I was taking Spanish classes at NDSU I bought a parking pass. It didn't actually guarantee me a space, but it allowed me to park. I could use the pass on any car, and theoretically could probably get away with renting it out. But if the person I rented it to didn't give it back, I'd be SOL.

When I was working at the legal aid office, my one perk was a parking pass. But it was registered to my license plate, and if they discovered the pass on the wrong car they'd have had the right to tow it, so nobody that was smart would have rented it.

So, can you actually assign your parking rights to another car? If so, is the going rate during the convention high enough to be worth your while? That is a question only you can answer.

And shame on all the folks trying to turn a thread about parking into a political discussion. Take the politics to Fred's House of Politics, folks!

To me, the factors in the calculus are (1) can you do it, and (2) do you want to bother doing it.

Lots of people do this sort of thing.

Usually it's owners of property near a public event (a 4th of July fireworks display, a festival, a fair, a sporting event, etc.) that has insufficient parking.

My brother's "public event" is an extremely desireable commuter train station near his house. He's gone through periods when he rents out a space in his driveway to a commuter, and periods when he doesn't. Depends on how he feels. Which reminds me ... I should insist that he rent out his driveway so that he can pay back the thousands of dollars I've lent him.

Well, if they're going to rent it out anyway......it might be worth your wile (sic) to park in it just to prevent a Republican from parking in it.

What purpose does that serve? The Republicans are going to attend their convention one way or another. As Boo says, it's just a matter of whether it's worth his while (& if he can) rent the space and pick up some cash. If you had an extra car stereo and decided to sell it on eBay, would you refuse to sell it to a Republican? Even assuming you could make it a little more difficult for one Republican to park, so he has to walk an extra few blocks, that's rather a childish way to express your political opinions.

On the other hand, the OP asked a legitimate question (though it's one only he can answer for himself): Might he want to keep his space so that he can more conveniently join the protests?

Pick up an inexpensive car cover for your vehicle. Place stickers/slogans on your car cover appropriate to your political views. Park in your own space.

If it were me I would simply protest the lack of wisdom exhibited by those who seem to be in the catbird seats from both parties.

I doubt that they would allow you to sub-let your parking spot.
