I just got back from a week long hunting trip in Colorado. We were amazed at what fit in the back of the Prius. The list included luggage, 4 rifles, 2000 rounds of ammo and reloading gear for 2 calibers along with bullets and powder for 2000 more rounds, a large tent, chairs, two tables and a pivoting shooting bench, two sets of shooting rests, a microwave oven, two coolers, 7 cleaning rods and cradles, three tool chests, two boxes of cleaning supplies, tripods and windflags, blankets and pillows, two pistols, cameras and binoculars, a laptop, a borescope, jumper cables, and two men. We drove into a head wind at 78 mph and averaged 41 mpg for the 2000 mile round trip. We drove the Prius across wild rough and tumble prairie and had one flat tire which we quickly fixed. The car has 99,000 miles on it and has never had a problem. This car is amazing. My conservative hunting companion will be buying one next week. He just kept shaking his head in amazement. The pictures show a pile of stuff I would have thought would have been hard to fit into a suburban but the Prius handled it just fine.

    That is so cool. Hahaha

I love being able to carry a bunch of junk and still get great milage. :) The Prius has awesome utility.

That is a damn nice shooting stand btw.

F8L- Thanks, it pivots around a center point. I built the top myself to make it long enough to accomodate the longer stocks I use and the Farley coaxial front rest.

BTW- My wife got almost identical times in her Prius at the Houston drag strip.

Well of course you got it all into a Prius. Thanks in no small part to the technology Pringles uses to get all them chips into that small can. Apparently, by the looks of things, a regular bag of chips wouldn't have been able to fit.

In that case it's even nicer than I thought. I assumed it was a manufactured piece. Great work. :)

Your wife raced hers at HRP? Haha that is awesome! She must be one hip lady. :D

Nice to know there are a few of us NON-tree huggin types here. I do all of my hunting with a camera and lens these days. Dont mind sticking the pole in a fishing hole once in a while.

Did anybody else notice that you can see the curvature of the earth in the photo?

Yes, it's unreal how far you can see. When you are shooting N or S at those distances, you would almost have to worry about compensating for the coriolis effect. Looks like an awesome adventure. I'm going to put that on my "to do" list.

A person on flat ground can not perceive the curvature of the Earth.

For observers on the ground with eye-level at h = 5 ft 7 in (5.583 ft), the horizon appears at a distance of 2.89 miles.
Horizon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Earth curves at a rate of approximately eight inches per mile.
    Wee Universe Science Trivia

Even if we were to double the horizon distance to account for the ground bound observer (even though the observer can not look opposite directions at the same time . . . but for argument's sake . . .

    2.89 x 2 = 5.78 miles of viewable horizon.
5.78 miles x 5,280 feet per mile = 30,518 feet of horizon view

8 inches per mile x 5.78 miles = 46.24 inches of horizon drop

46.24 inches / 12 inches per foot = 3.85 feet of horizon drop

    3.85 / 30,518 = 0.000126 or in other words. NOT A CHANCE!

Even observing from an airplane at 20,000 feet, one STILL can not observe the curvature of the Earth.

If anything, the curve in the picture is either that of a hill, or an artifact created by the camera lens.

Sufferin, how are you at ballistics? I need a spotter. We use 8" targets at 1000 yds. The wind is our greatest enemy.

I wish my Prius would hold that much. I struggled to get a medium cooler, a Longaberger picnic basket and a small cooler in the back yesterday. But the hatchbacks are better at that.

What is the weight limit in the current model? I think I saw where my 2001 is only like 800 pounds. That's a lot of lead you got there. I wonder how much that weighed? I do like the 2001, because it's easier to say that the firearm is locked in the trunk and separate from the ammo, if ever passing through gun-unfriendly states (eg Illinois).

    Sufferin'-
Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

    fthorn-
I think all the ammo and components weighed in at less than 100 lbs. These are 204s. 100 loaded rounds weigh in at 2.5 lbs. I'm sure I was over the gvwr. I would have driven faster on the curves coming home if not for this fact.

The 2004 gvwr is 850. The two adults in the car weighed just under 400 combined.

I don't ever want to own another car that is not a hatchback.

yeah. my 1983 Mercury Lynx, a small car (the sister to the Escort) swallowed my La-Z-boy recliner WHOLE with the lid down. It was in the 'reclined' position, not totally upright, but not disassembled, either. I recall hauling that down 3 flights and into my Lynx single-handedly, too, from my apartment in chicago burbs.

About 20 seconds after I read this one of my coworkers said outloud that the inventer of the pringles can had passed away May 4th. (weird coincidence that I was reading this tread at the time.) Apparently some of his ashes were placed in a pringles can and buried with his urn.

What were you hunting, a small army? That's a lot of ammo!
Looks like a fun outing. Cool stand. Nice tetris fit of your gear.
