    I can understand!

    Wow, your baby is down, but not out. Nobody was injured, which makes all the rest very trivial. (I know ... easy for me to say!) Let us know when it's fixed. :)

    I am really sorry to hear about the accident, but like everyone said, I am glad that you and your family are ok. Bad things like this happens, but at least it's fully recoverable. It's a sad sight to see your car damaged like that with no fault of yours.

    sorry to hear about the accident, happy all are fine.. however, i was always told to never slow down in the hi-speed/passing lane in that you are likely to get rear ended. instead maintain speed or increase and signal your intention to move out of that lane, and then do so when safe. maybe driving schools are different in sweden.

    Wow. €15000 is half what you paid new and € 18889 is roughly $29k US. That must be around 46k US for a Prius. I had no idea they could be that expensive.!

    Glad everyone was ok and glad to see you have you Prius back good as new.

    Just for future reference. I don't know what kind of driving school you went to, but slowing down when someone is coming up fast often just leads to road rage (as you suspected at first) and is probably more likely to lead to an accident.

    Driving 30k miles a year, I see all sorts of things and have never been invovled in an accident, but have avoided a few. Anytime someone is coming up on me I simply try to move over a lane if possible. I think its the safest thing to do. It gets you out of their way and lets them go by and get far away from you.

    That is standard procedure when someone is too close behind and it's not possible to move over. The reason for this is that at lower speeds the risk that I have to hit the brakes hard is lower than at higher speeds. At lower speeds, vehicles can safely travel closer to each other - you have a larger safety distance at 50 mph than at 20.

    Here in Sweden, we're taught to keep about 3 seconds at a minimum. At 70 km/h the distance traveled during those 3 seconds is a lot longer than 3 seconds of going 50 km/h.

    I feel it's safe to say that it's a bit more difficult (and expensive too) to obtain a driver's license in Sweden compared to, let's say New Jersey where I used to live.

    This time, it was not possible to move and let the other driver pass. I always keep as far right as I can since that is both the law and common sense. When this car came up behind me, I was in the passing lane passing cars. The cars in the slower lane were tailgating so it would have been dangerous to try to change to that lane.

    Base model starts at about $40800 (US), I got the Prius Business Edition and some options for $47000, without options, it'd landed on $44500 . Then there is the Executive Edition that features GPS & bluetooth and that package starts at $48300.

    Hi Tenebre,

    I'm glad you've got your car back and that nobody was hurt in the accident. What I would like to address (and somebody, anybody correct me if I'm wrong):
    you mentioned in your original post that you slowed down by turning off your cruise control. If no brake signal was actuated I can (somewhat) understand the consternation of the driver behind you. They're flying down the highway, late for whatever they had to get to and the car in front of them slows without showing brake lights!

    I would (as other have mentioned) increased my speed to pass slower cars on the right and then pulled over to let the person in the Volvo pass.

    Again, sorry to hear about your accident and glad to hear you've got your car back.

    It's true I turned the CC of and that is the slowest way to lower the speed, after that I placed my foot on the brake just hard enough to activate the lights. Lighting up the brake lights didn't make him react either. When I turned the cruise control of, the other driver had already been tailgating me for a while. The speed limit on this road is 70km/h (that would be about 43 mph), I was driving 70 exactly. The cars I was passing were probably going 60 km/h so even a person coming up behind me at 120 km/h would notice that I was passing the other cars, not hogging the passing lane.

    An increase of speed would make me a speeder and also put me in the eye of the speed cameras stationed on this road. The police officers that eventually came to the scene said, after I explained what happened, that since moving out of the way was not an option during these moments, my reaction was correct - to slowly lower the speed. The insurance company agreed with me that the other driver was responsible.

    Glad to hear that everything and everyone is ok!

    I witnessed an accident involving a Prius and a Jeep Cherokee, anyone in San Diego..was this you? on the 15 South. The Jeep moved over to get onto the 15 where the 15 and 163 split and ended up using a PIT maneuver on the Prius. I stopped and went and checked on both drivers, and when the Highway Patrol came and everyone was gone, we joked about how that woman must have gone through the Police Academy to execute such a perfect PIT
