My garden got flattened last night. Bloody hail gave it the good news. I don't think I lost anything, but One of my squash plants is down to one leaf! The tomato plants lost many branches, but I think they'll pull though. The arugula looks unaffect, ditto the strawberries and the raspberry bush. I've thought about putting up a wire mesh to block the hail, but this doesn't happen every year. However, if it happens later in the season I could lose the lot. Anyone else have to deal with hail? If so, whaddya do about out?

I think wire mesh would be more effective against rodents than it would be against hail. Even a flimsy cold frame of 2x2s and plastic sheeting should deflect the worst of the hail. If that would be too hot for the plants in your area, maybe just a roof with open sides would work.

Bummer, Tripp. I remember the huge thunderstorms that developed along the Colorado Front Range and the damaging hail that flew down from them at least once a season. Back in the mid-80's we experienced a hail storm that virtually pummeled roof shingles into oblivion. Car windshields and bodies were destroyed, fabric awnings on business fronts were shredded and gardens, well they were converted to next season's compost...

Try 1/4" hardware cloth. The weave is quite a bit tighter than traditional chicken wire and the stuff feels pretty stout and should hold up to the average marble-size hail storm if it has a sound structure supporting it. It's available in most hardware stores.

I hope most of your plants manage to spring back and produce something for you. Pray for clear skies.

Setting up square foot gardening for next year, composting right now, I've got two rainbarrels that i need to set up once my guttering is up. I moved over the winter which meant no gardening this year...way too many other jobs right now...i miss gardening desperately this summer.

Yeah, I was bummed. It's set several of the plants back, to be sure. Doesn't look like the damage was too severe though. I don't think I'll lose anything.

Nah! I grew-up with lots of fruit trees in the back yard and my mom loved to grow veggies and can the excess bounty. Unfortunately, I didn't inherit that gene . . . and with the wonderful farmer's markets here in the Central Valley of California, why bother! They do it so much better than I ever would. ;)

For the first time, I have 10 plants growing on my side porch. They are a mix of cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers. Six of these plants are hanging, and the other 4 sit in pots on the porch. they've done really well thus far. I'm hoping for some fresh veggies this year!

Here's a pic so you can get the idea:

Nice, Brad. Everything looks healthy and seems to be enjoying the sunny exposure. Thanks for the pic.

    dawint,

Did you have to amend your soil since it's a non-raised bed, or is the soil in your area amenable to gardening already?

We have a tough time growing non-raised gardens in my region (Great Basin of Utah). The soil is very clayish and not very porous and there isn't much organic matter in it except for weeds, which seem to grow nicely almost everywhere in the planet!

I spent the first half of my childhood in California. My family started out in Ventura, then moved to Salinas and finally settled in Pleasanton when it was just starting to boom in 1970. I remember seeing field after field of fruit trees, vegetables, and barley from the back seat of our family car whenever we went to our Grandma's ranch in San Ardo. It's easy to see why you'd rather get your greens from Farmer's Markets. Nice memories for me... :)
