The parts guy at the dealership will ask you for the VIN number. They'll look it up in their computer system and give you the exact color your car was painted by the mfg.

Ok, now that I had a chance to see the car again in bright sunshine i can summarize.

The touch up paint, even though an exact match, is indeed darker. be aware of this
    for magnetic gray.

The pen tip on the touch up paint indeed does put it on poorly because it dribbles
out when you push down on the tip. You would be better off with a small paint brush
    or tooth pick.

The scratches I had, 95% of it can be buffed out. Heck during my 3 step cleaning
yesterday most are now invisible. I only had a very small area where whatever hit
my car actually dug in deep which the touch up paint now covers. Not even an inch long.

You have to know where the touch up paint is to even notice it on this color of car.

I agree with trying buff out first because most of the scratch would have disappeared. In other words I was seeing mostly a reflection as others stated. What
does not buff/clean out.... you should then consider touch up paint.

thanks everyone who replied. i am still not wanting to get a clear bra to be honest
for what they cost. Like 2% of the cost of the vehicle does not strike me as a bargain
when you consider i live in NH and the winters we have here and what it will do to
every other part of the car not protected.

    Thanks in advance,

I have been known to accessorize the fine point brush with the point of a toothpick.

I have noticed scratches on the front bumper of my car. It could be while parking I might have got scratched.. Now going by your experience, I should try to see if it can be buffed out. Who normally does the buffing? or is it something I could try myself. I do not want to rob a bank for this :(

If the scratch is small as the one I usually fix, this is the place to go:

    Toyota Prius Accessories

I always get the pen touch up and the TOYOTA match is spot on. I do not even use clear coat and get a decent match, hard to spot the repair.

    Give it a try.
