Smart Key help

Condor, welcome to the site. The answer is: It depends. There is another SKS thread today where Galaxee (resident tech expert) said there was a part # change so the fobs for 2004-2005 are different from 2006-2007 fobs. I think the newer part works on the older cars but the older part won't work on the newer ones. (I may have that backwards so search for her post.) Her DH is the guy to see if you are in their neighborhood.

 

if you're in durham you can have it done for $40 (0.5 hrs labor). depends where in nc you are.

 

I need a smart key for my 2008 prius. Any idea if getting one on the internet will work? Dealer charges from $200 to $300.
On ebay, I can get them for about $90.00 but no one wants to take it back if I cannot program it?

Bit of topic, but might help, recently bought a Buick Lucerne in Fla, traded my Avalon for it. Buick dealer kept putting off giving me a second key with fob etc. Finally i left Fla and headed North. Finally the Fla dealer mailed the key and fob home but told me to send him info on the local dealer so first dealer could pay to program the key. Second dealer said its 5-10 minutes work to program a key and fob, not worth my time billing the other dealer. . Long story short depends on the dealer, some are wonderful some truly are monsy hungry. Good Luck

 

While we are on the subject of the Smart Key. I have a question. Under normal conditions, I have the smart key in my pocket and the other one stays safely at home.

Next month on the trip to Hybridfest I want to also have my spare smart key with me. Now the question. Will having both smart keys with me cause any problems?

 

Almost no problems at all, else we would be seeing complaints when couples we out and each had their own keys/fobs. When I go trips, I take my extra fobs with me. (Just in case.)

Only type of problem would be if you left your spare fob in car and tried to lock car using Smart Key.

 

Actually it will lock fine with the FOB when another one is still in the car. You just can't lock it with the button on the door.

My wife and I both have our keys in the car at the same time and no problems at all. Except, as mentioned above, when she leaves her purse in the car. But this is a feature since on a couple of occasions I have had my keys in my jacket and then taken my jacket off and left it in the car. If I could lock the car with the door button under this circumstance I would be locking the keys in the car all the time.

Hi - yep - you can buy a used FOB on ebay, either black or silver emblem/logo - it must be a 2007 or 2008 FOB for a 2008 Prius.

Also, in my experience, you can program the FOB yourself to start the car, but you won't be able to program the lock/unlock buttons (instead, just get some additional metal keys cut for an emergency lock out - should cost about $10 tops per metal key) - then you can hide a key under the car, and hide a second FOB inside the car.

Also - if you are going to program the FOB yourself to simply start the Prius (search for instructions on Priuschat in the knowlege base - it really does work!!), then you can buy either a black or silver emblem FOB....BUT...if you want the FOB to both start the car and unlock it, then you'll have to take ALL of your FOBS to a toyota dealer for a complete reprogram ($about $80).

Hope that helps. I programmed two ebay FOBS myself (both silver emblem) for a non-Smart key system prius. It takes a while to get it right - be tenacious.

 

I just lost one of our Prius key fobs :-(. Fortunately I still have the key. That will teach me to fiddle with the emergency key latch....

Will a 2008 fob work with a 2007 Prius?

I have a question regarding buying a smart key replacement from ebay. The ebay ad says "This remote will fit the years 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009. Both remotes come with an uncut key. They were never used. Both remotes have the Silver Logo. Programming is not included. I have of 2 of these for sale. These remotes were from 2 Priuses that we owned, so they have been programmed for cars that we no longer have. MDL: B31EG FCC ID: MOZB31EG IC: 2584A-B31EG"

The MDL, FCC Id and IC match the one of my current smart key.But it says it had previously been programmed for another car but has uncut keys.

When I call the dealer he says those people who are selling in ebay dont know. You cannot reprogram a key that has been used for another prius.
I dont know whether the dealer is correct or not. The dealer charges 300$ for the key and the programming. Any help regarding this?
