Bump, just letting everyone know that the meetup is still on.

    We will be having:

    1) Picnic: hamburgers/dogs and all the fixins

    2) Battery teardown: Wayne Mitchell (FireEngineer) will tear down a Prius battery

    3) Prius driving clinics. Diamond Larry will teach how to drive the Prius to great MPG, See what your Prius is capable of.

    4) Fuel Economy Challenge. This is the fun part. Compete against others in the Prius on a challenging 10 miles couse.

Overall should be a fun day.

I sat down and crunched the numbers and the following is what I got in comparing my 2008 Toyota Prius with my previous SUV, a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo.

2008 Toyota Prius (11.9 gallon fuel capacity):

58 MPG average with 9 gallons of gas I have a range of 522 miles.

If I drive 12,000 miles a year with gas at $4 per gallon, the Prius will cost $827.58 in gas for one year ($68.96 per month).

With gas at $4 per gallon and with a 58 MPG average, it costs me $0.07 (7 cents) per mile to drive my Prius.

1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo (23 gallon fuel capacity):

18 MPG average with 9 gallons of gas I have a range of 162 miles (360 miles less on the same 9 gallons of gas).

If I drive 12,000 miles a year with gas at $4 per gallon, the Jeep would cost $2,666.66 in gas for one year ($222.22 per month).

With gas at $4 per gallon and with an 18 MPG average, it would cost me $0.22 (22 cents) per mile to drive the Jeep.

If I drive 12,000 miles per year with gas at $4 per gallon, I am saving $1,839.08 per year by driving the Prius rather than the Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo.

I am saving $153.26 per month by driving the Prius rather than the Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo.

I'd like to look for one around Labor Day or so? When I actually get a day off work here I'll work on it a bit and see if it can materialize. It would be a shame to go three months without a meet.
