OK Ladies and Gentlemen. My wife took our 2008 Prius in for it's first (5000 mile) oil change and tire rotation. When she asked them to keep the tire pressure @ 42/40 and to make sure the oil level was 1/4" below the full mark she was met with great resistance. Was told about the dangers and premature tire wear because of overinflation and that oil levels below the TOYOTA reqimended FULL level would void the warranty. She called me and put the technition on the phone.... after some conversation I finally relented and told them to just go ahead and do as they normally do according to Toyota specs. So now I'm looking to you for comments and some backup for our next trip in to the dealer.
    What do you think?

As for the tires, I think the best approach would be to simply asked them not to adjust your tire pressure. Take care of that yourself. I can understand their resistance with that issue.
As for the oil, the manual indicates on page 404 that anywhere between to low and high mark is "OK". Show him that, and ask him to show you where Toyota recommends the full mark. He's full of crap. If the little insignificant service advisor (who knows nothing, actually) won't cooperate, ask for the service tech manager. If you still get resistance, you have a couple choices to make.....stay or go.

Just do the service yourself and keep the receipts for the oil and filter as proof if needed down the road for warranty work. Toyota cannot void the warranty just because they didn't do the required maintenance services. The service manual that came with the car will tell you everything that is to be done at the different mileages. I find things like oil changes etc to be faster if done myself that the time needed to travel to-from the dealer and the time spent there waiting.

What next trip? Find a mechanic who knows how to listen & follow instructions. If I took the car to the dealer & found they reduced my tire pressure I'd park the car in front of their service entrance and refill the tires right there myself. If they send a satisfaction survey please express your displeasure. There are plenty of threads refuting both positions.

Stealerships do what they do and then overcharge consumers.

Next time change your own oil and rotate the tires yourself. That way you know it is done right. These two things are very simple to do and will save you a lot of money.

They are money motivated definitely. I told my service adviser to maintain the 42/40 and not change it. He looked concerned and I said "You do want me to come back for service on my car and my wifes Prius dont you?"

I know have it written on my account to maintain 42/40 and it is on my work order receipts so it is "officially" noted by the dealer.

$ talks. Some of the Toyota dealers cars are not gas friendly you know. They are losing sales of those also. My dealer has 100's of trucks sitting all over the place. You'd think it was a truck place only. You talk they will listen.

If you generally like getting service there it's worthwhile to try training them. I leave a big sign on the windshield that tells them not to touch the tires. I also provide them the oil, three quart bottles only. Problem solved.

I suspect the oil level thing is cultural: a certain subset of Americans think that more is better, and thus everything must always be tip-top full. Of course this is not the case with oil level. Anything between the ADD and FULL marks is fine, modulo any oil consumption that may occur until the next service (in 50 months I've observed none, and on this site so far nobody has reported any significant oil consumption).

Obligatory Oil Change Advice: no matter who changes the oil, always always always look under the hood and check the oil level yourself before driving away. This can find gross errors and prevent expensive damage.
