I just hauled a bunch of nesting boxes down from Grass Valley and thought it was funny that the guys from the Audobon Society didn't think all the boxes would fit in such a "tiny" car. :D

There really were not that many but I took a pic anyway because it was a nice environmental moment. The most environmentally friendly mass-produced car doing an environmentally friendly task....

    There are:
All boxes are to be placed on 2 of our Preserves (Doty Ravine Preserve and Swainsons Grassland Preserve). The plan is to have 4th-5th graders team up with college students and work together in placing the boxes throughout the preserves (427 acres and 469 acres). These are working preserves with leases for cattle grazing integrated into the management plans. :)

I don't understand why they thought they wouldn't fit. Looks like you have plenty of room for more.

Aye, if I wasn't worried about scratching the window tint or interior I could have fit another 18 I think. lol

I think it just looks so small from the outside and people don't think of it as a hatchback I guess.

I was surprised myself by how much I could fit in the trunk. And with the fold down seats you can go to Ikea or wherever and stock up! Here are my trunk photos, from going on a camping trip (that's close to birds, right?), and another time.

More on the topic, we have tried attracting birds to our apartment windows by hanging feeders outside, but they come and peck at our window boxes (plants) instead. Oh well!

LOL, damn birds! Around here we have the most evil bird next to a Kea. It's called a Scrub Jay but all my science friends refer to them as the Al Qaeda of the bird world. Loud squawky things that rob food from everyone and everyhing.

You mean like Magpies? Quote from a neighbor who hates them: "They eat the little baby birds!" They are about as noisy as Jays.

So no shingles on those houses? ;)

The birds just make a mess on MY car (poor Pearl). :)

Payback for stealing their homes (building your over theirs) and poisoning their environment. Just be glad Native Americans (First Peoples) don't do the same or Pearl would be a real mess. :p

Where I used to work, my boss was an avid hunter. He had trophies all over his office, a moose head, mountain lion, etc.

One day he hung a bird feeder outide his window. We always thought it would have made a great Far Side cartoon. Bird flies up to the feeder, glances inside with a look of complete horror. He never saw many birds, I guess that's why.

    LMAO! That is great.

Hmm, I wonder how I go about moving this to the environmental forum where I meant it to go.

Senegals are cute and all but I have to work on California native species. If we were in West Africa I might be forced to give "The Destroyer" a box of his or her own. :D

To the Toyota main birdhouse forum:

All good stuff. But if I was handling multiple 'previously-enjoyed' birdhouses I would be wearing a particle mask for sure. Aerosolized avian feces (rodents too, for that matter) can make you a litte sicker than you want to be.

    Nag nag nag

    I hear you and understand.

But the boxes in F8L's Prius look like they are newly made from recycled lumber.

Aye, they were. :) The guys from the Siera Foothills Chapter of the Audubon Society make them out of wood that would have normally gone to the dump. They are not pretty boxes but they are exactly what the Cornell Lab of Ornithology prescribes. All the gaps and holes are there by design. :)

Later on when we have to do any cleaning or repairs we will wear gloves and masks just to play it safe. Thanks for the advice just in case.
