i still don't agree with spending that much money on an automobile even if you have it. you plug your tesla into the electric grid, where does it get its power from? and back to the 100k for a car... that money is better spent actually doing something helpful to the environment, and maybe helping your fellow citizens out, you could buy a handful of priuses for lower income drivers who have no choice but to drive gas guzzlers around for example

Aren't they making a sub $40K model in a few years? Like in the $20's?

How can you be so certain that those who have the income to spend $100k on a car have not also made large donations to charity or possibly bought a fleet of Prius for his entire family or whatever? I get your point but I think one thing that might be more offensive than somebody pissing away THEIR money on a toy is being presumptuous enough to tell that person how they should spend it. I'll give the benefit of the doubt that the OP and anyone else who purchases a Tesla has a strong enough conscious to use their money for other, less selfish acts.

I think this judgement is uncalled for.

The OP already listed many investments he made to help the environment, you are wrong to criticize him on that.
Also, you cannot assume he's not already helping his fellow citizens out.
Moreover, if the OP has worked hard to make his way up, he is entitled to benefit from his hard work.

Also, has already been said, if he spent 100k on a car, I'd rather it be a Tesla than a Porsche.

At any rate, you Americans shouldn't criticize! He's buying an American built car, essentially funding/paying the wages for Americans living in California (where I understand they need every dollar). ;) Further, he is helping fund a company that intends to make more electric cars.

Oh, and the use of power "from the electrical grid" is more efficient than other power sources, as the generators benefit from the efficiency of scale and are driven to further efficiency by economics more strongly than "small generators", such as individuals.

Whether charging the car and discharging it messes up this efficiency cycle is another matter we -could- discuss, but perhaps in another thread. ;)

If I hit the lotto I would buy one. But for now I only own one in my dreams. It is my background picture at work
