On July 1st I was going straight thru a green light (doing 25mph) and a Ford Explorer decided to make a left hand turn in front of me. Needless to say I hit the brakes and hit him in the side. My whole front end crumpled up towards the windshield. No airbag deployment or broken windshield but the front end was a mess.

I'm insured with Geico and they inspected and totaled the car today. My body shop told them they could not repair the car to 100% condition. My surprise came when they told me I would get $27,223.28 (for my 2007 package 5 with leather and Sirius) after my $500 deductilble was taken out. I'm very happy with that amount. Goes to show that not all insurance companies are bad. That's about what I paid 18 months ago.

Wow, I'm very impressed. You can't ask for much more than that. That's within $1,000 of my out the door price of my 2008 package 6!

Glad you're OK, and I hope you're not at fault in this incident.

Geico did its homework and gave you the true market value for your loss.....
Unfortunately even you have cash now, acquiring another Prius in a reaonable timeframe maybe harder these days.

Wait a minute! A guy turned left in front of you and you hit him? Doesn't HIS insurance have to pay, since the accident is his fault? In which case, there should be NO deductible, period.

Or do you live in a no-fault insurance state?

No-fault-state or not, your insurance pays. In the case of the other driver being at fault, your insurance would pay you and then collect from the other insurance company. That's why we pay for insurance... so they can take care of the hassle and negotiate the best payment while we get along with our lives.

Yep, x2. Most people I believe contact the other person's insurance company to get things going. I contact MY insurance company and have them deal with getting payment from the other guys insurance. It's a much much easier.

Well actually, that's not ALWAYS the case (I can cite personal experience to the contrary).

But it doesn't matter: if there is reasonable expectation that your insurance company will be made whole by the other party's insurance, they should not charge any deductible (and I can also cite personal experience to back that up, as well...)

So: unless it's a no-fault state, I say there should be no deductible applied for this based on the facts we were given (might be other facts we don't know about that affects this, of course...)

Geico is paying and going after the other guys insurance for reimbursement. When they get it I get my $500 deductable back (my last no fault accident they gave me the $500 right away without waiting for the other ins co. Maybe they will do it again). The other driver admitted to making the left hand turn in front of me and got a ticket for 'Failure to Yield'. Geico has already made the determination that I was not at fault.

No one got hurt in the accident.

I'll just be banking the money for now. We have 3 other cars and the Prius was only used for 7,000 miles in the 18 months that I had it. 2,500 of that was a single trip to North carolina and back (52 mpg).

Well it's good to hear nobody was hurt. It's also nice to have cash in the bank. My Prius is 2 years old with ~25k miles and I'd still be heartbroken if it got totaled though!
