JBL Dead Need Help

    Hello Audio Experts,

    I was pulling extra wires out from under the passenger seat to get ready for Hybridfest 2008 and I totally screwed up my JBL. The radio turns on and I can switch between AM, FM, SAT and the VAIS controller, but I have no volume control. I tapped the 12v line when I first purchased the car to power the in-dash computer. I have no voltage on the 12v line from the JBL. I checked all fuses under the dash using an ohm meter and they all toned. I'm lost on what to check next, but I don't want to drive 7 1/2 to Hybridfest without a radio.

    When I bring up the audio screen to adjust the sound the Front, Back, Left, Right the system does not allow the inputs to be changed. They are set to far Right and Back.

    Please offer any suggestions to allow me to debug the problem.

    So there's no power going into your JBL amp?

    I'm assuming you might be correct, but I don't know what else to check since I checked every fuse. Any additional ideas would be helpful.

    I would check all the connectors on the amp, especially the one with power wires. There's a hot wire, a ground wire, and a remote turn-on wire (small gray wire, if memory serves).

    Based on what you've described so far, the problem appears to me not to be in the Head Unit but under the passenger seat.

    I checked the power wire which is not showing any voltage. The connectors are tight, but I don't know what feeds the connectors. Does anyone know an easy way to remove the passenger seat from the rails? That would give me a lot more insight, if I could see better.

    Any help would be appreciated. I looked at the wires and fuses, so I'm stuck at this point.

    No 12V going into the amp? Uh oh...

    It's easy (and recommended) to remove the seat. Only four bolts. You don't even have to take it out of the car. Once unbolted, you can lean the seat backward and have plenty of space for investigation. If need be, disconnect the sensor connectors under the seat. No harm doing that.

    I just pulled the passenger seat and I do not have any voltage on pin 34 going to the JBL. Does anyone have a diagram or suggestion of where the power from the harness is coming from it.

    I only have the electrical diagram for the 2003 Prius. Won't help your case. You may want to do a deep Google search in this forum. One may be floating around somewhere.

    Let me make sure I understand the problem. So you turn on ACC mode, turn on the Head Unit, then check pin 34 for voltage, correct? Can you see if the remote wire has any voltage on it? I suspect the amp is turned on by the H.U., but that's just a guess.

    When turning on the car, pin 34 does not have any voltage. The head unit switches between AM, FM and works normal. But, when pressing the volume control nothing happens. I disconnected the connector and checked voltage pin 34 0 volts. I signed up for the tech.toyota for the day, but I can't find where the voltage should be coming from. I'm going to disconnect all wire taps from 34 and see if I get voltage.

    Any other to help would be appreciated. I'd hate to take it to the dealer before leaving for Hybridfest!

    The tech.toyota helped solve the problem. Now for the stupid response. I checked every fuse in the cabin, but I did not realize another fuse box existed under the hood. After reading on tech.toyota, it mentioned the AMP fuse. The AMP fuse is located under the hood at 30 Amp. After replacing the audio system is working perfect and I have all the wires tucked away for Hybridfest. Thank you zenMachine for all your help. Your ideas led me to solve the problem.

    Word to the wise, Prius's have fuses under the hood for the amplifier.

    Wow, didn't realize that the amp's fuse is under the hood. Good thing to know.

    Glad you got the problem fixed. I was going to suggest, if all else failed, get an MP3 player with some nice headphones! :)

    One thing for sure, the $10 for tech.toyota was worth the investment. After going into the diagnostic mode and typing in exactly what was shown the first tech document explained what to check. No trip to the dealer and I'm a happy person.

    I think it was something like "Hey moron, check the fuse under the hood" :eek:

    Actually, it said DSP-CON, when I searched for that in tech.toyota, it brought up the troubleshooting technique for that situation.
