Ok folks, Does anyone have any info on the the number of Prius that were, - or have been stolen over the past year?? Since we all know that the MPG is around 50 +/- doesn't that make our cars alot more attractive to the chop shop, overseas exporter, common street level car thief then most?? Especially since the price per gallion is around $4.10 per gallon and is expected to go to $5.00 by the end of the year. ( Yeah, it ain't never going down, Europe was paying out equivalent of $6.50 per LITER back in 1957) I know the Pri with the EKey also turns on ther anti-theft system, But,,,, How REALLY effective is it.??? Anyone with any input as to stats ? Flintlock
At least among the members here I don't recall ever hearing about a Prius stolen... which is good news.
I'm sure there are a lot of break-ins. If someone really wants to take the Prius, they'd have to flatbed it.
When my dealer was trying to sell me all the add-ons, Lojack and alarm systems, etc. he told me that my Prius would be a target for theft because of all of it's neat-o technology. Pfft! I live in a bad neighborhood, and my Prius is untouched. (Knock on Wood) Most cars that get broken into here have a lot of stuff in them, or GPS/GPS mount showing, etc. That's what I keep my car super clean inside with nothing inside, not even a tissue. Have never heard of a Prius stolen, and there are 2 Gen 2 in my parking lot/neighborhood and 1 Gen 1.
The chances of my Prius or anyone else's getting stolen are slim to none. I'd of stood a better chance having my 1998 Camry stolen then the 2008 Prius ... and it's not even in the top 10 of most stolen vehicles in any of the 50 states according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau.
The uneducated think a hybrid is one step from exploding all the time. That must keep thieves at bay!
A lot of cars get stolen solely on the value of their parts being interchangeable with other cars in the "family." Honda Accord has a historical reputation for being one of these. When you start ripping through a Prius there's not a whole lot that can be shifted into other cars. You might want Volvo seats in your Prius, but not the reverse. Also, Prius has tiny U.S. market share overall. Right now there doesn't seem to be much of a market for parts, but I guess this could change. (I'm wondering if the average car thief could drive a Prius if you handed him the keys.)
Interestingly, my very first post on Priuschat four years ago was about the steal-ability of the Prius. I was on the list and settled in for a 14-month wait. Gonna blow the dust off this relic of a thread: http://priuschat.com/forums/audio-electronics/1899-se-ss-supplimental-security.html
As others have posted, theft without a flatbed would be hard. You could steal someone's fob, I suppose. Now, removing parts, such as headlights, are another matter.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) web site has a series of reports on vehicle theft rate. The URL is: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/portal/site/nhtsa...7d9d1046108a0c/ In summary the theft rate per 1,000 Toyota Prius vehicles produced in the model year indicated is: Year ----- Rate/1,000 cars 2001 ----- 0.4438 2002 ----- 1.0116 2003 ----- 1.1572 2004 ----- 0.4169 2005 ----- 0.3801 Although the rate is “low”, it isn’t zero. Compare it to other vehicles on the list to find out if these numbers make you feel more or less secure.

It doesn't seem to go much on value. Early in this decade the Neon had such a high theft rate you might as well have left the keys in the car. Neon = 41.6 per 1000 made in 2002
Mmm. This seems to have turned into a Googling contest It's pretty hard to find mention of the Prius on vehicle-theft lists. No mention on any insurance web sites. Here are the most stolen vehicles in the nation for 2007 (seen at numerous sites): 1995 Honda Civic 1991 Honda Accord 1989 Toyota Camry 1997 Ford F-150 Series Pickup 1994 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Pickup 1994 Acura Integra 2004 Dodge Ram Pickup 1994 Nissan Sentra 1988 Toyota Pickup 2007 Toyota Corolla
A lot of those cars are still on the road today, which speaks volumes about how reliable they were. I have a friend who has a 1991 Accord, a total POS inside, but it still runs perfectly and has never had any major repair work. It's past 250,000 miles.
They're actually stealing the same accord over and over from each other. Kidding aside, I think there are a bunch of reasons why cares are/are not stolen. The Prius looks funny (not in a good way) to most people. Is not a speedy performance car and can't readily be modified into one. Can't be hotwired, have to have the fob or flatbed it. Across town from me there is a street full of condos and apartment complexes. They have dozens of civics and accords stolen per year, kids take them up to Hartford, mix and match parts, race them then abandon them. I also think people are not stealing for practical long term use, which is where the Prius really excels.
i want to know the rate of which prius cars are vandalized or smash and grab situations, hid theft, etc., to see if its worth getting the glass breakage sensor installed
they aren't, but there are still reports of people stealing the headlights and mfd prius owners group has a prius police blotter page! Police Blotter : the Prius owners group
