Actually, I got lucky. In 2004, the Prius website misrepresented the color Tideland Pearl as a rather hideous shade of green puke. Therefore, very few people ordered it. I was on the list for a package 9 and when a #9 Tideland came in, all the people in front of me were holding out for their specific color. Since the Toyota dealer was on my way home, I swung by and checked it out. No regrets. And it only took 7 months! Keep in mind that when the Gen 2 was released in 2004, there really was a 14-month waiting list. Some people are complaining these days about 4 or 6 weeks. That's nothing.
We are about to retire our 91 Accord when our Prius finally gets here but we're keeping our 97 Civic (not the 95 model) so we should be much safer as well as improving our gas mileage.
I am *totally* going online to buy Avery window labels and print those out -- specifically the design where the angry ball of lightning nukes stick-figure man!!! Not because I'm actually worried about anyone stealing my baby (around here I have to worry about the steering column airbag) but because it's so damn funny!

that technique of "hacking" does not match my definition of hacking. for example, hacking a password by looking over someone's shoulder is not exactly rocket science. if they could park next to the car on the street and simply use gear in a van to open the door.. well that to me is a hack If you have to scan the key that the person carries... you basically had physical access to it.. 12 inch limitiation to read it! then they simply brute force the key which to me is not hacking... just a script kid type attack of throwing the kitchen sink at it. being right next to a person while they are opening their car with the right gear is a very similair threat. this means you were targeted by someone who has access to you on a semi regular basis. i do not think this is the type of hack where you can scan the key being used and then reliably steal the car in time. as in you went into a store for 15 minutes or at the mall. that level of sophistication would easily allow the person to make 50G a year at a normal job!?! of course if the person lives next door to you.. then the opportunity arises due to the amount of time they can be around the car. yes it was hacked... but it does not help some punk on dirty main street USA downtown to steal your prius on a whim as they walk home from their drug feast of the night. it is that type of person, in my opinion, that is stealing honda accords on a whim. they have the opportunity (anytime it is unguarded), shared knowledge from their peers on how to do it, and no brains. thanks for sharing though. i remember reading that on slashdot.org a while back. my resume when it comes to hacking for example is finding a bug in sudo which allowed me to root a nix box. sudo is the same program you use on apple computers, for example, to get higher privs.
Here is an Australian version. Prius is good for being hard to steal but it isn't hard to break into and steal from, and parts are not marked to make them easier to identify when they are offered for sale. http://www.racv.com.au/wps/wcm/resources/file/eb34650fb2f874a/2008 Vehicle Theft Ratings.pdf
if you people are so confident that the prius is so theft proof, and the odds of someone smashing your window to steal your airbags, mfd, headlights, etc then go take your prius to your local toyota dealer and have your package #3 theft deterrent system deactivated, then call your insurance agent and raise your comprehensive deductible to 2,500.00 or better yet drop the comprehensive all together this whole topic is getting moot now, as the majority of people in this thread already have the theft deterrent system activated
There is a big difference between driving away in someone's Prius and smashing the windows to steal the contents. Tom
The Prius is 1) worth much less parted out 2) is difficult to steal, even harder to drive after its stolen 3) because of its complexity, most mechanics dont have the ability to part them together
1) worth much less parted out if its worth less parted it out how come the toyota prius is the number 3 most expensive car to insure? 2) is difficult to steal, even harder to drive after its stolen 3) because of its complexity, most mechanics dont have the ability to part them together compleixity my butt, the entire dashboard can practically be taken apart using my kitchen spatula or a paint scaper i even learned how to replace the rear window washer sprayer by finding out which part of the hatchback just yanks out judging from the reports i have read from the east coast, i would say that people who break into prius cars aren't too considerd with resell values and more conserned with the cost of methaphemdamine or crack cocaine
yah even if the unthinkable happenend and someone did manage to start your prius and drive off or flat bed it, your insurance company wouldn't pay off your claim, and think you are dishonest because you had your keys with you, thanks a lot Wired 14.08: Pinch My Ride=
Just printed out some using P-Touch label maker and black tape. Actually looks good! Similar to (hopefully) HIGH VOLTAGE!
The Seattle Police Department just took a stolen report on a Toyota Prius. It is the first to my recollection since the Prius was released. I'm assuming that the thief used a tow truck, at least I'm hoping that's how it was stolen. If anybody has any information or intelligence regarding stolen Toyota Prius please contact me at: [email protected]
wouldnt surprise me if someone forgot to turn their Pri off and it was stolen. twice my SO did this. once i just happened to look out the window and noticed a light in the Pri, went out and sure enough it was sitting there on in the ready position. another time, it was Saturday morning (our only day off together) and i walked out to get it loaded up for a trip we were doing and its sitting there in ready position after sitting there all night like that... keep hoping we have a little luck left cause im sure we have definitely used up some of what we had
