Smaller car, bigger insurance premium?

Well yes, but that's rather the point that I think several of us were trying to make. We replaced older cars or trucks with new Prii and our insurance payments either didn't change or went down.

Your logic isn't out in left field, it just doesn't seem quite as universal in this case. As with many things with the Prius, it seems that the answer is somewhat more complicated than it would be with other cars (better safety features off-setting higher repair costs associated with a new vehicle.)

 

My Prius insurance costs about $45 a month and I carry $100 deductibles on both comp. and collision with a 100/300 liability through State Farm. Mine costs about $20 more then my previous car and only $15 more per month then our previous Explorer but I also didn't carry the full coverage on either of those vehicles as they were both 10+ years old.

 

You forgot the heighest weighted factor, Your credit score factors about 50%. The only state I know of that has rules against credit score being factored in is California. (I work in Risk Management)

 

I pay $228.23 for six months coverage 300/100/50 $250 deductable with Statefarm.

 

My Prius 2008 costs 30% less to insure than my previous car, a 2006 MazdaSpeed6.

 

There goes that antiquated thinking again, " Big means safe". Yeah, if you were in the habit of running into things then yeah bigger means safer. But it's much safer when you can avoid and accident by maneuvering our small agile lighter cars around the obstacle rather than trying to plow through it. I thought that physics still applied hear on earth, that something that had more mass was much harder to stop and change direction than something that is smaller and lighter.

 

My Prius replaced a 12 year-old Chevy conversion van, the fullsize truck, not a mini-van. My insurance went down significantly. From BIG to medium & from Old to New... ...I'm a happy camper!

 

with 1 at fault accident, being 41,and single im getting quotes in the 841-1151 range (for 6 months) i am in california, and use wawanesa, and its currently something like 1200-1500 for 12 months for me.

allstate looked good, they offer a waiver if an uninsured person hits your car, so you don't have to
burn your deductible. they also offer loan payoff as an option. they were towards the low end

 

Interesting, I pay a bit less then the "Prius average" from the article, for my new 2008 Prius plus my 1994 Areostar. Granted, I drive the van very little, only to take the dogs somewhere, or if the snow is so deep I can't get out of my street. On the other hand my poor Prius has to take me 60 miles to work everyday.

its a lot cheaper if you lie and tell them you only drive it for pleasure and 13,000 miles a year

i wonder how they find out if you really drive say 35,000 like i do

 

They wait until you make a claim, then if they find out you lied, they turn down your claim.
Not a good idea to lie to an insurance company.

 

my insurance went down $23.00 per 6mo. with USAA. Prius replaced 05 Dodge Magnum

 

Mine went down about $100 annually from my '08 Altima Coupe AND that includes an increase in my liability coverage...it had not been updated in several years and was now below state required minimums so I had to increase to get to the required coverages.

 

Mine went down a lot from the 2000 Sienna to the 2007 Prius. do not know how much, my wife pays the bills and I don't think she remembers how much anyway. If someone is paying more for their new Prius insurance, maybe they crashed the pre-Prius car and it was their fault????
