I'm wondering if it's a fairly easy job to remove the driver and passenger airbags on a 2008 Prius.

Does anyone know where the screws are to remove the one on the wheel? Also I'm assuming that to get the passenger one out you have to remove the glovebox? Is this correct?

Why? It's more preferable to fly through the windshield?

I didn't ask for your smart alex remarks. I bought a wrecked Prius and I'm trying to fix it so take your comedy elsewhere.

Oh and by the way a seatbelt is what keeps you from flying through the windshield. Not an airbag GENIUS.

Yes. I got some air bags from a Prius that had been rear ended. I bought this wrecked Prius with minor damage and I'm going to swap the airbags on it. It looks pretty straight forward but I just wanted to see if anyone had a quick write up. I didn't find anything in a search.

thats what I figured, I upgraded a tercel one time from a wreck, new carpet, seats, a/c unit, rear window defogger etc. If you removed the airbag from the rearend wreck you should have a good feel for reinstall. Good Luck. BTW maybe you know this can ya replace standard headlights with HID?

I've read way too many posts on here from people who want to disable the seatbelt beep because they are somehow immune to car crashes and so I thought you were doing something similar - since you didn't say otherwise. Oh, and I am a genius, thankyouverymuch.

I'm not dumb enough to do something like that. The airbags are there for a reason. That's why I'm trying to put new ones back in this wrecked car!

A one-day subscription to TIS would probably give you the technical drawings and removal instructions. It costs about $10. I've been trying to get there myself but new babies are very needy. :)

To remove the drivers side bag you will need to remove the 2 plates on the back side of the steering wheel behind the spokes. They will just pop out if pry under one edge. There will be a bolt under each plate that holds the bag in place. The drivers side bag should come out. You will have to replace the clockspring also so just cut the 2 plugs off but DON'T cut off the black ground wire as it does not come with the new clockspring. You will need to remove the center nut and use a steering wheel puller to get the wheel off to replace the clockspring.

The passenger side is a bit more complex. Start by removing the "A" pillar trim: pull away the door gasket then pull the trim away from the pillar at the top. There is a special clip at the top for the side airbags so make sure to pop it free from the trim and not the pillar. After that one is free just pop the bottom clip out. You will then need to remove all the silver vent housings. They pull straight out from the dash. Don't roll or twist them or you will break them. Next is the upper drivers side panel There may be a screw or 2 holding it in and several clips. Next remove the upper glove box, there are 2 screws behind 2 covers. Now remove the lower glove box by opening it and pressing in on the stops on either side and then disconnecting the damper on the right side. It should now just pop off the hinge. Now remove the entire touch screen assembly. There are 2 bolts (one on each side) that hold the screen assembly in. Now you can remove the screws on the forward edge of the upper dash panel and then remove the 2 bolts that hold the passenger side airbag in. You will have to go through the lower glove box to remove the passenger airbag bolts. Disconnect the yellow airbag harness connector on the right side of the dash above the upper glove box and the 2 gray connectors above the steering wheel. You should now be able to pop the upper dash up and forward and then lift it out of the car. The passenger airbag is attached to the underside of the upper dash pad. You will have to replace the short harness for the passenger airbag also.

You will most likely have to have your airbag module reprogrammed. There are plenty of places that will do it but you local Toyota dealer won't/cannot. You will also most likely have to replace your seat belts since they have pyrotechnic charges in them also (I did in mine).

Also suggest that you disconnect the negative terminal of the 12V battery and wait at least 90 seconds before you start work, to reduce the chance that an airbag will inflate in your face.

In another thread ProblemChild says bad things happen if you disconnect the seat airbags and turn your Prius on. There might be a similar caution for the steering wheel airbag.

    I will echo the above . . .

Disconnect the negative cable and WAIT 90 SECONDS before working on the airbags.

DO NOT TURN YOUR PRIUS ON WITHOUT THE SEATS/SRS/AIRBAGS RECONNECTED!

I'm trying to do something similar so if I discover anything else I will post here for you. Also I have a month subscription to TIS and will be looking through it today for info on airbags.

This would only apply if nothing has deployed. It can set a code in the module that cannot be cleared. At this point it really would not matter. Disconnecting the 12 volt battery is a good idea though, especially if you are going to handle anything that could be live airbag wise.
