yah as far as i know there aren't any aftermarket tools except the toyota/mastertech scantool and those cost hella money, and the toyota toughbook laptop costs even more
someone should come out with some kind of software solution by now you think

    FYI:
When I bought in Dec., I was told that only packages 1,2, & 6 are availlable in Cal. Only pack 6 comes with the alarm already installed. In the lower 2 it is a dealer addon. I got mine free in the deal, because they had a car they had already put one in, so I dont think he was blowing air up my skirt ;)

Does the basic Prius come with an alarm that needs to be activated?

    Thanks

I'm sorry but I've read the boards and manual and I am confused like the poster. Is there an alarm in the basic prius package 2 that can be "opened or unlocked" in addition to the security that the smart provides? If sowhat is the procedure to "open" it? Thanks

    cramam;
yes there is a passive alarm system you can have turned on a prius package 2, you need to go to a toyota dealer to enable it.
the alarm will go off if someone forces open a locked door or the hood
if someone breaks a window and you want the alarm to go off that is optional and it is probably an extra cost item

Following these threads, the answer appears to be "yes", the Prius comes with a factor installed alarm that needs to be "activated" on packages lower than 3, it appears that if your car doesn't have the optional glass breakage sensor you may need to activate this alarm. Also apparently, some dealers are nice and just activate the thing.

The alarm in question is just a noisemaker that goes off under certain conditions (see the other posts for list of these, someone spelled them out.) How much "security" noisemakers provide you is a matter of personal opinion.

Theoretically, you could test whether yours is active by trying to set it off. Follow the other threads for suggestions on how to quickly and easily do this.

With respect to activating the alarm, the procedure appears to be very simple:

    1. Take your car to the dealership.
    2. Ask nicely that they turn the factory-installed alarm on (based on what cobraz said, the feature code is RS3200, knowing that my help get your request answered.)
Apparently, this option is only accessible through the Toyota mastertech scantool or laptop. It does not appear that there is any sequence of events that you can use to activate this yourself (know, things of this ilk: a) wait for the full moon; b) assume the full lotus position on the hood of your Prius; c) while in position on the hood begin reciting the appropriate incantation from the Toyota spell book, ere I mean maintenance manual; d) while you're reading the incantation ere instructions have your assistant run around the car, clockwise, opening the front doors and hatch back in succession, three times; e) within 5 seconds of completing step d), start the car while holding the ODO button, and immediately activate the rear-wiper and clean the window.)

To summarize for those still confused:

    1. ALL Prius come with the vehicle immobilizer. The car will not run (go into "ready mode") without the FOB "in view", either plugged into the dash, or in the car near the steering wheel (SKS equipped car). No noises are generated by this system in the event a thief tries to take the car.

    2. ALL Prius come with a "factory alarm". It is not tuned on in some option packages. A Toyota scantool is required to turn it on. Some dealers will turn it on for you, some will want money to do so. If that's all you want them to do, some labor charge is reasonable. This alarm simply flashes the lights and sounds the horn if a door (or hood or hatch) is opened while the car is locked without unlocking using the key or FOB. You can test your car to see if it's activated by:
    a) Roll down drivers or passengers front door window.
    b) Lock car.
    c) Reach in and unlock the door and open it, or "pop" the hood.
The horn should sound and the lights should flash if the alarm is enabled. Use the key or FOB to shut off the alarm. In my experience, if you have SKS it will not stop the alarm from tripping, even if you have the FOB in your pocket as you reach into the drivers side window! Unless you grab the door handle.

    3. Once the "factory alarm" is activated, you can purchase a "glass breakage sensor", which is stuck under the centre of the dash and plugged into the alarm system. It costs around $165. Installation is probably extra. It will trip the alarm in "2" above if it senses glass breaking (audio sensor).

Well my experience is the alarm will trigger if you pop the hood without unlocking the doors even if you have the FOB in your pocket. The SKS was on, the FOB had a good battery. I was at a car show on a hot day, so windows down a bit, forgot the doors were locked, and when asked if I could show the engine I just reached in and released the hood latch. The alarm went off, which startled me, and I had to think for a few seconds how to shut it off. I had never tripped it before. :) I haven't tried the door from the inside, but I suspect it would trip the alarm as well.
