I hope this plays out as claimed (and will work in the cloudy Pacific Northwest).

    FTA:

"This is a major discovery with enormous implications for the future prosperity of humankind," said Barber, the Ernst Chain Professor of Biochemistry at Imperial College London. "The importance of their discovery cannot be overstated since it opens up the door for developing new technologies for energy production thus reducing our dependence for fossil fuels and addressing the global climate change problem."

Nocera hopes that within 10 years, homeowners will be able to power their homes in daylight through photovoltaic cells, while using excess solar energy to produce hydrogen and oxygen to power their own household fuel cell. Electricity-by-wire from a central source could be a thing of the past.

    I'll tell you what.
If I can drive a car or truck that has no gasoline engine in it and my house will be powered on it's own solar panels then I'm all for it!

There is another tread discussing this topic.

    That's often the case .
Similarly, there's always a new post re 'Major discovery' of a new EV. Often & sadly they invariably turn up as vaporware. But, on a happier note, there actually IS a solar company that promised the sky, and is now delivering:

    Nanosolar - Products

Their product's cost is nearly on par w/ the cost of fossle fuel ... especially considering how much higher the price is for traditional solar panels. Now, for the down side. The oilies' lobby that conrol our legislators don't give a hoot about solar, so most incentives here in the U.S. are going away by the end of 2008. Consequently, Germany has hoarded all nanosolar's production contracts. Thanks Bush, thanks Chevron, Shell, BP, ET AL

I'm hopeing nanosolar will be able to ramp up production to supply the average U.S. citizen, without being bought out by the petro dollar folks.
