Amapola was "Rear-Swiped!!" -- Repair Cost?

We had a nasty scratch on the pass. side rear bumper corner due to a run in with a old rusty chain link fence. Total cost was $450 to remove the bumper cover, repaint and re-install. Hope this helps.

 

The original estimate to remove, repair and repaint my rear bumper was just over $500. The final cost was just under $600 because they didn't notice my decal bumper protector and they had to buy another one and install it.

 

Ouch! I have a couple of less annoying bumps on mine: one on the drivers side fender panel above the HSD badge... looks like someone opened a door against it... and one scrape on the driver's side front bumper where someone obviously was parking their car next to mine without worrying too much about scraping my bumper.

It burns me up! Having said that, mine are not quite so unsightly and I've just left them as-is because I know if I let myself repair every scratch, I'll get obsessive about it. Still, seeing yours makes me reflexively want to take my car to a body shop!

 

question: My company has cameras covering almost everything that goes on here except the restrooms (and I can see who goes in and comes out) so does yours? I can see my car on the camera and can see in history if a car hits it.

If your company doesnt have a policy of premises security it should. Also if they dont have it posted that you park at your own risk then they could be responsible for the damages.

(Late reply to this thread, but thought I'd chime in anyway, because part of my story is truly impressive, I think.)

I know the feeling -- my 2004 Prius received a nasty scrape on the driver door, and accompanying dent to the front fender. (This, I discovered upon returning home after a week's vacation.) I'm 99% sure it was the neighbor's handiwork -- she is often reckless backing out of her driveway. I've observed her come within clueless inches of my car on several occasions. Moreover, the black scratches on my white Prius match the white scratches on the corresponding rear bumper of her black minivan. Received no note or other admission -- acted stupidly oblivious when I approached her about it. "Subhuman" feels like the right descriptor.

There are some cheap ($20 to $35) primer-coated aftermarket fender replacements online, but they're not such an impressive deal after shipping costs are factored in, not to mention added costs for getting one painted. So I called all the local salvage yards, in hopes that a white (or cheap non-white) fender could be found. So, not a lot of wrecked Priuses out there, I was actually happy to find. Two I came across were the wrong color -- one for $100, the other $150. Eventually I found a white one for a better price -- $50. But, the paint was damaged when the car was "totaled" in a fire.

The visit to this donor Prius was truly upsetting. This once white 2008 Prius -- with only 12,000 miles on it -- was now all black and dark grey inside and out, skeletal, smelling of charcoal. All plastic components (headlamps, tail lamps, side-view mirrors, door handles, bumpers, dash, etc.) were melted like wax. (The nav screen must be glass, for it was still unwarped, but framed in tar-like molten plastic housing.) What's worse is that this is suspected to have been an insurance job. The yard owner said he has quite a few cars like it, motivated by the economy. I know times are desperate, but talk about subhuman behavior -- especially done to a Prius of all cars, and a practically new one at that. I feel ill about it.

The yard owner picked it up for about $1500, hoping another Prius would come along, between which he could restore a single, drive-able car, because -- now get this -- when he attempted to power on this burnt-to-a-crisp Prius, it started right up! And drove, without the slightest hiccup! The screen displays just fine and the nav system works -- just fine. Whatever was done to set this poor car ablaze, somehow the components under the hood remain intact, along with the wiring. (I noticed that one of the plastic fluid reservoirs under the hood was slightly melted, but still un-ruptured.)

They spent 15 minutes working the fender free, which included cracking off the melted headlamp and "hybrid" emblem gracing the fender's side. The owner has a friend who paints cars, and said he'd get it repainted for about $100. It looks like they'll help me install it for free. So, $150 (plus tax, some research time, and mileage getting to the place) gives me a restored fender. (My door still has slight ripples in it, after buffing out the scrapes -- but I'll live with that.) Could have been worse. I also know where to go for certain spare parts, should I need them.
