What a performance....historic and will be talked of for decades to come. 8 gold medals in a single olympic games...7 of them in world record time. This has been a thrilling olympics much to the credit of Phelps' superhuman performance.

You ruined it for me

I was waiting to watch it on TV.

. . . oh well, like there was any doubt. (I think.)

I wonder how many of his own records he'll break at the 2012 Olympics?

Now, who holds the record for total? He's got...14 gold now. Right?

Great job by Michael. He just finds a way to win!

Wikipedia says he is second in medal count all time, behind a Russian gymnast with 18. Very easily could come back in 2012 and get that record as well.

I don't understand what all the hubbub is about. All he did was win eight golds and set seven new world records.
    Oh wait. yeah, that ROCKS!

I watched every race and never stopped being amazed.

Those are definately going to be in he historical archives... You have to believe that Michael would have lost if the other guy had simply kept his face down in the water instead of lifting it up before touching the wall/trigger...in that last shot when Michael has touched and before the opponent does you can see all the bubbles from the turbulence of the water...easily 0.01+ second loss...but kudos to Michael for realizing that he had to have that extra 1/2 stroke to propel him ahead.

I've enjoyed every moment of this experience...kept my kids up 1 1/2 hours past their usual bed time so they could experience and remember it....He's clearly in the discussion for greatest athlete of all time.

What is amazing to me is that there are 5 photos before Michael Phelps touches the wall and he is behind the other guy in the first 4 photos. How did he do that? :D

Phelps wasn't even wearing a supersuit?

I heard the pool was designed to reduce turbulance. That coupled with the supersuit is helping to break the swimming records.

How do you design a pool for less turbulance?

The Americans are so strong in swimming that they periodically come up with a dominant performer like Phelps. The sad part is he will not be able to capitalize much on his success, because swimming is not a TV sport. Those bikini girls playing beach volleyball probably get more TV time back at Venice Beach than our world class swimmers who collect Olympic medals for their trophy cases.

You have to also applaud that amazing 41 yo woman, Torres, who is still pretty much the fastest woman freestyle sprinter on the planet--losing by an eyelash in the finals.

The lower torso part of the suit was the same new material.
In the free style swims he wore the full body suit...probably figured the motion of the 'fly it didn't matter for the upper torso.

The pool had special baffles that stopped the waves. The lane separators were also baffles to stop waves. The pool was 3 meters deep instead of the usual 2 meters.

No matter any of that...everyone had the same advantage.

I disagree there...he's set for life. So many speedo $$ will fly his way for years to come, he'll have books, TV, movies, speaking engagements. Spitz is still a household name 36 years after his feat and Phelps is, arguably, much more engaging and personable with that great smile.

It's a severe breach of PC policy to mention Dara Torres without posting a photo!!!

    Thanks for the info.

And while everyone had the same advantage against each other, they had advantage for breaking records over past olympics.

At least swimming is a real sport that requires real athleticism. Golf was created so out of shape men could play it and say, "Hey! I'm an athlete!"
