How many bolts does it take to replace a light bulb?

I had a head light go out on my 2005 Prius. I couldn't get my hand behind to pull it out without having to remove the entire light enclosure. When I started I soon realized that the enclosure is attached to the bumper, and I had to remove the front bumper to remove the enclosure. How crazy is this? It would seem that it would have been nice if they would have simply installed some kind of hinge so the light enclosure would bend upwards to give you access to the back of the unit to replace the headlamp. There has got to be a better way!

Theres a writeup on here somewhere that helped me swap out the stock ones for Silverstar Ultras. All i had to do was remove the hose to the airbox on the passenger side, and someone said remove the fusebox cover, so i did but dont know if that did anything.

ZERO!! 1 pop-up clip and the air duct it holds down on the passenger side, the fuse box cover on the driver's side if you don't have small hands. Removing the bumper is TOTALLY UNNECESSARY!!!

Thanks for the link Bruceha. I just replaced the passenger by partially removing the bumper. It was the only way I could get the whole light fixture enclosure out. When I bought the bulb, it came with a second one, and I was going to wait until the driver's side failed because of all the trouble I had trying to replace the passenger side. I'll look again after looking at your pictures and instructions. But it still looks like a tight fit for my fat hands.

I didn't say it wasn't tight, I said it could be done! ;)

When you do the driver's side, take off the fuse box cover (to get a LITTLE more room) then find the tabs on the dome shaped rear cover for the bulb. Twist it toward the side of the car (i.e. you should be raising the tab UP). It might be a bit reluctant to turn at first but you don't need to get your whole hand behind it. I think I pulled up on a lower tab with my left hand hand while pushing an upper tab with my right thumb.

The cover might also resist being pulled back (toward the fuse box) when you open it up as it seems to seal pretty well even after being turned. The HARDEST part is weaseling the cover out of the way with the wires attached, but it can be done. Note that the white (or was it silver?) fabric covered wire wraps around the lamp housing but that is what makes it long enough to remove the cover without disconnecting the wires.

Since you've had the whole thing apart on the other side, none of this will be unfamiliar to you.

If you have regular halogen lamps, I believe there is a writeup in the actual owners manual. Not 100% certain, but I seem to recall seeing something like that when I first got the car. I haven't read it in awhile, so I could be wrong..

I watched the video and there is a different 'cover' for the non HIDs. Thus, if forte88's car doesn't have HIDs, my instructions won't be as useful. The rubber boot covering the back of the housing is not at all the same as the hard plastic dome on the HID version.
