    dual VVT-i is variable valve technology on both the intake and exhaust valves. Valvematic is...stepless VVT-i? cause VVTi-E is the electronically controlled valve lift on the LSh and IS-F right?

    right - Toyota had paper on it maybe year ago. It combines lift and timing, and goes away with throttle valve, and it is continous (no steps). I think In any case, it is breakthrough as it is significantly better (8% more efficiency and power compared to double vvti) without costing more (otherwise it wouldnt be implemented accross the range).

    So it's basically what BMW calls Valvetronic, first debuted on the 2001 7 series. In that case, how is it any different from VVT-i? If anything, it would complement it. (You can respond here and ignore the same question I asked in the other thread with your Auris)

    check the link, it has a bit more info... difference is that it incorporates lift as well, not just timing (just like 2ZZGE) and it is stepless, and goes away with throttle valve.

    VVTLi had 2 profiles, this has unlimited profiles.

    In any case, difference between Double VVTI and Valvetronic is measured at 5%-10% at both economy and power, and Double VVTi engines are already class leading as it is. Which is what matters.

    I mean check Yaris and new Fit - Yaris gets significantly better mileage with engine that dates to 1999 (has been refreshed several times), new R type block and Valvematic will bring 15% more power and 15% better mpg than current Yaris 1.5 NZ engined. Now thats what it matters!

    Ahh ok.. well then I can see where the extra hp comes from with Valvematic.

    Well I would hope so with the new Yaris. The 2ZR in the Corolla is very close to the Yaris. In Canada, it's rated 7.6/5.6 for an automatic 2ZR Corolla. The 1NZ in the Yaris is 7.0/5.6 with an automatic.

    there you go... and Corolla is 20% heavier and 20% bigger engine!

    Since 1.33 engine they are releasing now, is replacing 1.3l NZ engine in Euro Yaris, and will get both 15% more power and 15% more mpg, same should be expect from 1.5 version of the same car.

    all we know is that it will be marketed as 1.33 (to differentiate from 1.3), feature valvematic, have 100hp (up from 87) and have 15% better mpg than 1.3.

    It will also go to Yaris, Corolla and Auris (replacing 97 1.4 in those last two).

    iQ will also have 1.0l and 1.4D4D

    niiice... hmm.. I do not know. If I do trade my smart in in the future, it'll probably be for a Prius rather than an iQ.

    depends on what you need from car.

    I understand that due to lack of diesels (compared to europe), people are looking only at gas mileage these days in NA, and I understand that.... but within 3 years you guys should have enough hybrids and diesels with high mpg not to look at mpg alone but car that you need with high mpg powertrain...

    Our gas prices at $8 per gallon these days and people still buy Avensis if they need it and not Yaris. Of course, with diesel that averages 5-7l/100km :)

    That's true. So far, two seats and decent cargo suffices. Parking isn't too much of a problem but I have already utilised the smart's short length in a number of street-side parking spots.

    But the Prius will appeal to the techy side of me plus it's gonna be more fuel efficient than the smart and it's a lot more flexible (I can put a mountain bike in there) and c'mon, EV mode is just awesome. I can't seem to P&G with the smart. The gearing is so short that lifting off the accelerator induces moderate engine braking.

    i sold mine so I am thinking about getting one for my wife next year (and sell Auris)... I might get Lexus version for my self, got a bit pampered with this GS350. :)
