And a 3000# car doesn't have to be going fast to do damage when it runs over someone.

In this accident, the driver didn't stop until the body was in front. So where should we weld the noise generator to the exhaust pipe?

Gee Bob. I'm sorry. I guess I just must be dense. I am totally missing the point that you're trying to make.
I don't have an Escalade so I'm not sure were a good place to mount a backup alarm would be. And since we don't have our Prius yet, I'm not sure were the best place on it would be either. But the ones that I mounted on my last two Ford Club Wagon full size vans, that I mentioned in a previous post, that I guess you missed, mounted nicely on the bumper brackets.
I didn't realize that my post implied that I was specifically referencing backing up.
I don't understand how you can think mounting it on the exhaust pipe would be a good idea. The exhaust pipe would get too hot.
So many point out the that the noise generated by the tires is sufficient. I was just making a point that not all accidents happen at speeds high enough to generate sufficient tire noise to give sufficient warning. Either noise helps or it doesn't. I don't understand why you believe you can have it both ways. Either noise helps or not. Either Prius is quieter than most cars or not.
So I don't understand what part of my post you where trying to address. All I was addressing was that a car, any car, hybrid or not, does not have to be going fast enough to generate an audible noise level loud enough to alert someone, pedistrian, bystander in a parking lot, pet, grandchild playing in the driveway, whatever, to cause a catistrophic accident, that may have been able to have been avoided.

My apologies! I was pretty unhappy with the troll in another thread. In my crude way, I was trying to point out that there are a class of slow-speed, fatal accidents, back-overs. The Chidester report is grim reading and it covered four accidents in detail.

What was especially distressing was to realize that in two of the four accidents, the driver didn't stop until the body was in front of the vehicle. The first was a mom who ran over and killed her 18 month old daughter. The fourth was the driver of the Escalade. Although no one has an accurate record of the back-up speeds involved, I find it hard to believe they were faster than a running man, ~8-10 mph. Not shown was an aerial view of the Escalade and a stain of blood in front of it on the street. Grim reading indeed.

The other two accidents included one with a kid on a bicycle. He survived but the damage to the bike was impressive. Significant amounts of metal were scraped away . . .

Congratulations on your new Prius and I hope your backup camera works well. My concern remains the irony of folks asking for noise makers yet ignoring the exhaust pipe under the rear bumpers of these 50 back-over accidents. How much noise does it take? That compounded with the 'internal only' beep in the new Prius instead of at least 'bleeping' the bleeping horn ... something that others could hear.

Yes, I know at night, it would irritate the neighbors. Ok, put in some sort of 'double shift R' to defeat it and let the default, 'single shift R' keep it. But make it so everyone involved has a fair chance to avoid the accident.

Thanks for the reply, sincerely. I know what it's like to be impassioned over a subject. This does not happen to be one of them for me. However, I do plan to keep tabs on HR-5734. Read your posts. You may want to check out mine next time you're in OpenCongress. I agree that all too often kneejerk laws are passed that do nothing toward solving to problem. But I do believe that many more cars are becoming extremely quiet and may pose a potential hazzard, not just hybrids, especially with the increased use of cell phones. As long as they have introduced HR-5734, let's see if we can't get them to seperate the facts from the fiction. I believe the last time I felt that impassioned over something anyone said, was when John McCain proposed getting the money to cover his health care plan by eliminating employers from being allowed to claim their cost of providing heath care coverage for their employees as a tax deduction. Oh! That'll improve healthcare. Take what little incentive is left away from the employers that can barely afford employee healthcare benifits now. And I'm a registered Republican, altnough I've never voted a straight ticket in my life. Anyway I digress. Never let anyone take away your passion. I apologize for my impertenence. Thanks again for the gracious reply. :tea:
