Hello

Do they still make those garage doors that are one solid piece and flip up?
They don't roll directly up and on rails like most do nowadays.

Does anybody know? What are they called?

I am not going to be installing an electric garage door opener.

I used to have one. It was made of wood, on site. It had springs on the side and was still extremely difficult to open. I really don't recomment one.

All of the purchased garage doors I've seen are the ones with panels on a rail. You don't have to have a garage door opener. They also have a spring but are balanced nicely and can be opened easily. I've opened mine manually but I have a garage door opener.

I would never go back to the heavy, wooden one piece or give up the garage door opener.

I suppose you might be able to find someone to make one for you if you can find the brackets and springs for the sides. It's just a wooden frame, braced with plywood sheathing.

'ello Mate, well yes they do, I believe they are called a one piece garage doors, I have one. You have to counter weight it with springs, but once set up properly it will lift with 1 finger, mine does!!!

However that being said I do not think they have double and triple wide versions... way too heavy!! Mines a single car garage!!

Good Luck on your quest!

I have 2, one is a 3 metre single and the other a 5 metre double and you can automate them. B&D here in Australia make the hinges, my doors are a simple steel tube frame and the same steel cladding as my shed is made from.
I like them because they don't reduce head room in the door opening much and the cladding matches the shed walls. Roller doors are popular here but segmented doors are gaining popularity.

I believe they are called lift up doors or B&D call them "Tilt-a-dor"

Hi Pat,

In the late 80s and 90s I lived in a Sunnyvale (CA) townhouse that had a double garage door, one piece. The townhouse was built in 1985 IIRC. I agree that it was way too heavy and cumbersome compared to doors of modern design.

They can be a real problem in snow. Doors that hinge out are even worse.

Modern-day houses are always use multi-piece garage doors.
The 1-piece type is usually on the older houses (my observation), but what's good about having 1-piece door anyway?

Other than the look (on 1 piece), I think it's more dangerous because the flip-angle on 1-piece door is much larger compare to the multi-piece (which just roll up and down only).

I certainly can't think of any advantage. Even segmented doors come in redwood and many finishes that are a aesthetically pleasing. My segmented doors are easy to open and close with a single finger as the counter weight springs are properly adjusted.

I've heard them called 'up-and-overs', 'flip-ups', and 'way-walls'. They're not as convenient as the segmented push button type, but they have their own charm, and would be a functional improvement over the 1939 doors I have on my garage.

I thought they were called "cantilever" doors, myself. I used to have one until someone pulled into my driveway, thought she flipped to reverse, and gunned it FORWARD to smash the door to smithereens. I saw my chance and took it to get a rollup door, and have never looked back.

I used to have one - it was called a "lift up". One of the springs broke, and part of it flew across the garage and landed on the opposite wall. I think they run a safety wire through them now. I replaced the door with a roll up.

He doesn't. He probably wanted to sell you one, or something else.

I posted a warning about the OP being spam - so a Mod removed the OP's web link, replaced it, and removed my warning. Now you left asking a non existent PriusChatter a question.

You couldn't *give* me a one piece garage door. I had an old house with a one piece, and after putting up with it for about a year I tossed it and put in a proper modern sectional door.

Especially up here, with a heated garage, I want an insulated garage door.

A single section door pivots out in a single motion before being drawn by counterweights into place above the garage space. Single section doors may be impractical in areas with snow and ice, since the space in front of the door must remain clear for the door to function. People with single section pivoting doors should also watch that car bumpers, bicycles, visitors, and tools are not left too close to the garage door.

These doors were popular in CA because they are CHEAP and easy to install. Also, the weather in CA didn't generally require the insulation and durability of garage doors in the east.

The doors have many drawbacks; lots of wear on an automated motor due to lifting stress (reduced by proper spring installation), swing out so require a lot of clearance to lift and drop and are generally thin and uninsulated.

Never liked them and see no advantage over an articulated multi-panel door.

I had two of the one piece doors on my garage (one 16' in front, one 8' in back) when I originally bought my house. The house was built in 1958. I replaced both within the first year of ownership and took the aluminum doors to the recycler.

Pros: Cheap, already there.

Cons: Flimsy, dangerous, leaky (there was a 1 1/2 inch gap on the right side of the large one).

If you do have one of these doors, make sure there is a safety cable installed inside the spring(s). Mine did not have this. You could be killed if one of the springs break.
