Here's the new 2008 bulletin. Some people were having problems with the link so I saved it first and copied it here:

That's strange. I copied it to a folder in my PC and then copied it to the site. Oh well.

anyone think this would be do-able as a dyi project (getting part(s), installing)? leaving the pri at a dealer is a big life interruption for a relatively minor problem for some us one car-one person households.

This should be a pretty straightforward DIY project. But when I asked the service department about it, they said they couldn't just give me the parts and let me do it myself because of warranty issue or some other BS like that.

But you might want to give them a call and ask. Can't hurt.

Does anyone know if Toyota Canada also has issued a service bulletin on this issue?

I intermittently get a whirring sound when my iPod is plugged into the power outlet in the console.

Pretty sure. In fact, I first became aware of this TSB from a Canada TSB someone posted earlier. Then I had to go on the internet to search for the US TSB myself.

You should be able to find it with a simple search.

The first time we hooked up my wife's XM satellite receiver to her Prius (it was a Saturday evening, of course, and the dealer was closed), we immediately noticed this problem. I immediately identified (correctly) the problem as a "ground loop" issue. That is, using the 12v power plug to power up the satellite receiver (or an IPod) creates a ground loop that causes this noise/interference.

Went to Radio Shack and bought a ground loop isolator and some different audio adapters to connect everything together and the problem was solved for $40 in parts/pieces.

Didn't even know this was a TSB. Wow. And the GL isolator by RS is pretty chunky and with adapters and all, it takes up most of the spare room in the console.

So, I recommend everyone take this to the dealer and get the right part.

Anybody wanna buy a barely used ground loop isolator real cheap?? :)

Has anyone been able to get their dealer to install this fix? My dealer says that the parts are back ordered and will take at least 4 to 6 weeks. I'm something like number 400,000 for one of the parts.

Do you have a link where you get the Canadian TSB? and do you have a copy of the PDF you can post? Thanks!

Is this covered under the platinum extended warranty?

A bump to this thread... The noise problem is present in my 09 prius when using power for the ipod and the aux port. Does anyone know if Toyota has updated the bulletin to include 09s? I'll look for it and edit this post if I find it.

Here's a pic of the noise filter installed per the TSB:

My Ipod and XM were noisy until I bumped up the output level. If you're using the headphone jack on the Ipod, turn volume up and the radio volume down. For XM you can get into the settings to turn up the output level to max, might be able to do that to the docking port interface settings in the Ipod too.

It's not just a matter of drowning out the noise, more signal actually makes the noise attenuate for some reason. That solved my problem.

I have the same problem in my '09. My volume on my iphone is turned all the way up. If I unplug the power, the noise goes away.

Any update on whether this TSB will work for the '09's?

I've noticed this too with my '09, particularly between tracks.

Ditto on the 09. My iPhone sounds beautiful through the AUX port, until I plug it into the 12v. Same thing for 2 different models of Sirius receivers I have available.

You would think after Toyota issues a TSB, they'd... you know, FIX the issue in future models.
