Toyota USA has definitely hit the bottom of the barrel if the experiences of our extended family are considered. I would love to own another Prius but heard that they also will be made in the USA. How much time do I have left to avoid this? You should see the piece of junk that my brother in law bought, an 09 Tacoma, after they recalled his lovely 00 Tacoma. He said he is going to put a bumper sticker on it that says Made in the USA, and IT SHOWS.

    Wow. Trolling along there.

US made Camrys are fine. The six cylinder models have problems but that is not related to who makes them but engineering problems. Consumer reports says the four cylinder USA versions are the same or better then the Japanese. US workers are not the source of the quality problem. Its design and engineering that is usually the cause of quality issues.

I doubt there would be any quality issues with a US made Prius. A US made Prius could be greener then a Japanise made one. Less shipping fuel used shipping <the Prius would travel mostly on rail> and US companies are held to tighter enviromental standards who would be making some of the components. There would even be a chance of some of the steel in that junky (your words) Tundra would end up in it through recycling.

The quality of the Toyota/Lexus vehicles manufactured in North America are the same as the Toyota/Lexus vehicles manufactured in Japan. They are planning on starting to build the Prius in 2010 at the new Mississippi Toyota plant.

People buy Toyota, Lexus, Honda, etc... because they generally produce great reliable vehicles, it has nothing to do with whether they are built in the USA or elsewhere. The American Consumer is concerned with getting their money's worth out their transportation because they don't like to waste their hard earned money. Generally its all about the quality of the parts that the manufacturer designs into the vehicle not the people that make them.

toyota's kentucky factory has been producing camrys since 1988, and has added other models along the way. we have owned several camrys made in the usa and made in japan. no major problems from any of em.

Toyota also has a great tradition of training employees and quality control. A couple relatives of mine work at the Princeton, Indiana plant, where they manufacture the Tundra, Sequoia, and Sienna. Recently they cut back on making the Tundra because of slow sales. Instead of canceling the shifts, they have the employees take training programs to better themselves as employees. I think that quality materials and properly trained workers make a quality product, irregardless of manufacturing country.

OP trolling for sure. I have toured and read a fair amount about NUMMI in Fremont, CA, the place where Tacomas, Corollas and Vibes are manufactured. It is a world-class manufacturing plant and very nearly as efficient as the top Japanese plants. That plus Consumer Reports rates Tacomas as very reliable.

He guys, let's go easy on the naming of people as trolls. The OP has 2 other posts here and apparently is a Prius owner. Many of us have had experiences w/ one car model or another and once bitten one tends to become twice shy on such things...it doesn't make it fair or right, but it's still the way it is.

Let's be nice, give reasonable even handed answers unless and until it's clear that the person is actually trolling...in which case, rather than responding, please just report the post to the mods nad we'll handle it.

    +1

If OP is a troll, then I'm George Clooney.

    She joined in June 2007.

She had two posts around then, both clearly indicating nothing but good faith, non-troll question/replys.

Then she makes a third post more than a year later (trolls don't tend to do that) -- this thread -- with a question that thousands or millions have raised before in good faith about Toyotas, Hondas, Mercedes, Volvos and other cars that are not manufactured in the native country in which their reliability reputation was established.

    Sorry Anyasmom.

    * * * * *

Back to OP's question, no one has mentioned it before (although morpheusx's reply about quality parts implies it), but I think two of the biggest factors affecting a car's reliability are engineering or design and acceptable manufacturing tolerances -- both of which should travel with the manufacturer.

Why is utter crap like this showing up on the main page??? Guess what, there have been many U.S. assembled Japanese vehicles for at least two decades, and they are fine.

This isn't newsworthy, it's an insulting troll and shouldn't be in this section.

It's not a troll, it's an anecdote. Sh!t happens. I anticipate no anxiety about buying my next Prius, by which time it will probably have been made in the US.

In all the troll-not a troll hubbub, Anyasmom's headline question went unanswered, didn't it?

The obvious answer is that you have all the time in the world. Just buy a 2009 and you will be assured that it was not made in the USA. There is no time limit on when you can buy one. You can wait five years and still buy a 2009 model. Simple. :)

My 2004 Corolla was made in the Fremont, CA factory, and after 96,500 miles so far, I have had ZERO problems. It is a VERY high quality product.
Personally, and maybe it's just me, but I have a perception that the larger, less efficient vehicles (Tundra) are lower quality. But like I said, maybe that's just my own perception.
I definitely agree with what other posters above said; Toyota's corporate and engineering devisions will test and expect those cars to be up to Toyota's standards - because it does not reflect on the American workers; it reflect back on Toyota. A soccer mom isn't going to tell her friends it was made at the Fremont plant; she'sgoing to tell her friends "it's a Toyota."

You can buy the Japanese Prius now, and I'll wait for the American one. That way, I can put a sticker on my car that says "This Prius was made in America!". :D

It's not even an anecdote it is so malformed. It is utter crap.

The original post will serve as confirmation of some of the worst stereotypes of Prius owners.

Uh, I believe his '00 Tacoma was made in Fremont, just like the '09 Tacoma. I think very few '00 Tacos, if any, were Japanese built. :usa2:
