Alarm goes off whenever I open the door.....

    But it only happens if the car is unlocked and I open the door and get in, then within a few seconds, the alarm goes off whether I have my key fob with me or not. This is a big pain when I go out to the garage in the morning in my bathroom to get something out of the car.

    I'm guessing it's related to the auto arming feature I had the dealer turn on before taking delivery because everyone on the forum has said that it is disabled by default and recommends to get it done when taking delivery otherwise they might try and charge you for it later.

    yeah hmmm

    i think you misunderstood the posts. it sounds like you had the auto arming feature enabled. i think in all our posts we were just saying to enable the alarm feature in general for packages 2 or less, or package 3 or higher

    maybe you have to push the remote unlock button to disable the alarm before opening the door

    Always lock the car when you leave it. Then when you return you will be forced to explicitly unlock it, and the alarm will not sound. Or you can have the dealer turn it off again...

    I do do that of course except when it's locked in my garage and I have to get in it from time to time when I don't have a fob on me.

    So it sounds like the auto arming feature works even when you don't lock the door. If that's really the case, then I guess I'm going to need to pony up and pay the dealer to reverse it now :(

    yeah theres like several options the dealer can set
    one is enable disable the factory alarm (you don't want to mess with that one you want the system enabled)
    and the other one is passive/active, it sounds like you have passive mode set ON

    The prius repair manual has this weird flow chart, that kind of implies you can change it from passive mode on/off without even going to the dealer or using their scan tool!!

    if you can make sense of this, it would save you a trip to your dealer

    do not tell the dealer to turn off the alarm, just tell him to change it from passive to active (meaning in order for the prius to arm itself you have to lock the doors) , passive mode arms the prius whenever you shut all the doors, locked or not

    So start locking it when it's in the garage and keep the fob near the garage door. This has the added benefit of one day saving you from a dead battery when you leave the hatch or a door ajar, or forget to shut the car off.

    Not going to happen. I'll disable the passive mode. It's a totally lame feature. I'm an idiot for asking that it be enabled. If you live in an apartment complex or something and only have access to a car port, then it makes sense, but I have an 8 car garage, state of the art alarm system, and 8 high definition video surveillance cameras with object recognition and tracking software. I don't need to lock my car when it's in my garage.

    Doesn't sound like "Ponying UP" to have your mistake reversed, should be an issue for you either.

    just be sure you don't deactivate the entire system, why pay 2,105 for package #3
    just to spend $150 or something to de-activate the alarm, you can spend $165 for a glass breakage sensor and leave the alarm turned on.

    the whole alarm going off while the doors are unlocked is just a small customizable feature you can set yourself with nothing out of pocket

    a good argument on priuschat.com about having the alarm enabled is the guy that locks his car outside of the garage, someone breaks into the car, and presses the remote button and opens all your garage doors.... its come up here, where people get mad when they find out that the garage door opener in the prius does not require the car to be on or in accessory mode to operate....

    I've been trying and trying, but I can't get the first answer back. I've followed the dance to the letter and it doesn't work. I've tried all of the allowable variations. For instance, on the lock all doors and unlock all doors 3 times step, I've tried the fob(which requires pressing unlock twice to unlock all doors), I've tried the smart version using the passenger door handle sensor to unlock all doors as the driver side sensor only unlocks the dirivers side, and I've tried the key in the key hole.

    I've tried every variation I can think of. I'm well with the 5 second time slot for inserting the keyfob into the slot in and out 3 times. I've tried it faster, slower, and everything in between.

    I'm starting in the correct initial state(door open, key out of slot, and all doors unlocked).

    I've searched, and all I've found are others who've never gotten it to work and no replies from anyone who's succeeded ever. So I'm guessing there's a mistake in the document that describes the procedure and nobody has figured out how to work around it.

    yeah for all i know the dance might be different every year.
    going to passive or going to active are two different dances
    one step is to lock unlock with transmitter, and the other step is not to use wireless transmitter and door instead.
    curiously the g1 prius dance started with having the hood opened???

    need someone to sign up to tech info. toyota for the good of the team! and get us some current documents hehe

    try with having smart key disabled?

    this older 2004 prius dance, makes it sound like it wants the driver side door open and the key no where near the car

    i did this with smart key turned off, i dont know if it makes a difference

    when the chart says "lock and unlock drivers side door lock button 3 times"
    what it means is "lock and unlock the drivers side door with the red button (single door lock)" it does not mean the main power door lock control !!! once i used the single door lock button 3 times (you know that button that you try and slim jim to break into your car!!) the car correctly answered back!

    simpliefied directions for orignal poster:
    no key in slot
    drivers door open
    all doors unlocked

    in 5 seconds insert and remote key from slot 3 times
    close drivers door
    lock and uinlock doors 3 times with the remote control
    open and close drivers door
    lock and unllock drivers side door 3 times (the single door not the power door lock)
    open drivers door
    (the car will answer back, beep, saying yes basically)
    unlock drivers side door lock button
    close and open drivers door no more then 2 times*
    lock and unlock drivers side door with the single door lock button
    (car answers back)

    your car should be in active mode and the alarm will only go off if someone opens the doors after you have locked them



    * everyone else, opening and closing the door more then 2 times at this step will put the car into passive mode
    3 times = 0 second to arm
    4 times = 14 seconds to arm
    5 times = 30 seconds to arm

    Turning the SKS off was one of the first things I tried. Interestingly, list next to the legend's incorrect arrows is mention of something about "courtesy door "UNLOCK->LOCK" or something like that as being incorrect. I have no idea what it means.

    As far as not having the key near the car, one of the initial steps says key not in the slot or key outside of car. I'm not sure what that means, but since you have to insert the fob into the slot, the key needs to be in the car, but I did try opening the door and walking away from the car so the fob was out of smart range on the off chance that being out of range is an initial condition. Still no luck.

    I didn't try it with the hood open. Maybe it's still required but left out of the steps for the 2G.

    Drat, I got excited when you said you got it, but I've only tried it with the lock button above the handle as using the one on the door arm rest unlocks all of the doors which would be incorrect for that particular step.

    yeah when i used the one above the handle it worked, and i got the answerback (it beep and locked the drivers door)

    maybe when you insert and remove key 3 times in 5 seconds you have to insert the key wait for that little beep each time?

    leave the hood closed

    thats a pre 2004 step it won't work

    I haven't tried it with the hood open, but since you say it works with the hood closed, I forgo trying it.

    When inserting the fob into the slot, I've waited until one beep. I've tried variations. I can get a beep and half if I do it slowly enough and still be within the 5 seconds. I've tried a half dozen variations with just that one step from being really fast to as slow as possible but within 5 seconds.

    Maybe 2009 is different.

    Maybe I've got a defective sensor switch on the drivers door lock? Any way to test it?

    nah the 2009 isn't different, maybe the dealer can help you with this, im thinking the single door lock is fine on your car, or the door just wouldn't lock if you think about it.
    keep trying, maybe your timing is off
