I am interested in adding Sirius satellite radio to my 2008 Prius. In the interest of getting our Prius delivered early, we got an Option 6, which is satellite-ready but does not come with satellite radio already installed.

Frankly, I am nervous about trying to install it myself. You can buy a Sirius radio kit from the Prius Shop for $265, but does anyone on this board have any experience with self-installation?

I called my dealer and they want upwards of $900 to put Sirius in my car. This seems steep. But to buy a kit for $265, and then find it's technically a nightmare to install myself doesn't seem like the right choice either.

    Any advice? Thanks!

Many of us, including myself, have done the install ourselves. It seems a little daunting, but it's really not that hard....just time consuming. It's a great way to learn how the car is put together and will make it easier for you to do other projects later on.

That said, if you're uncomfortable doing that you can always ask a local stereo installer to do it for you...they will charge you around $50-100. I'd have the antenna put on the back of the car instead of the dash personally.

Rather than the kit in the store here (sorry guys!), I'd recommend the TOY-SC1/SCC1 combo. It's much cheaper and gets better reception. The sole disadvantage to it is that the up/down buttons on the steering wheel change channels up or down. For the factory kit, they change between presets which is usually more convenient.

Hi there if you want to install yourself, read these 2 excellent articles on XM Sirius installation. I used both guides, and they are wonderfully written!!!

    #1 http://priuschat.com/forums/attachme...sxminstall.pdf

    # 2 https://www.metrotpn.com/documents/PDF%20Files/Prius/Eddie's%20XMRadio%20Install/PriusXMradio3.2.pdf

#3 PriusChat Shop : Toyota XM Satellite Radio Kit [XM] - $265.00

The first is the factory install document, the second shows how to rip into the dash correctly so you can but it all back together so it still looks sweet! The 3rd is where you can buy the XM unit for $265.

It takes a couple of hours or so to do. Plugs into the back of the radio, and was very simple for me to install!!

    Have Fun

you can get a fully integrated, MFD controlled, Sirius tuner/emulator for less than $100 to $150. It's the Toy-Sc1/Scc1 combo.
And you don't even have to "take your dash apart". Simple remove your glovebox, and temporarily displace a harness to access the back of your radio to plug it in.
Don't waste your time and money on anything else. Do a search for a great thread on it;s install.

TOY-SC1/SCC1 is listed for a Lexus or Scion on this link. So it works for a Prius?? I'm guessing TOY=Toyota?

Lexus.. Scion ..Toyota . It works. I found the SC-C1 tuner at Circuit City for $39.00. Had to order the TOY-SC1 online. It may be in the retail stores by now. Great little divice. Imagine some folks have spend upwards of $800 for Sirius in the Prius (insane), and you could have it for $99.00-$150. if you shop around.

Just wanted to say THANKS to all you Prius do-it-yourselfers - lots of great information on this board. I went to Best Buy and had them install my TOY-SC1/SCCI, rather than take the time to do it myself. Am very satisfied - the unit cost me around $150, and Best Buy charged $65 to install it. MUCH better than having my Toyota dealer charge me $900 for the same thing. Thanks everyone - even though I didn't do it myself, I learned a LOT about how the car is put together from all of your expertise!

Cool, glad it worked out for you.
Satellite radio has become one of the things I've been MOST Satisfied with having purchased. Never thought that would be true.

i dont know if its been mentioned yet, but although they are out of stock on the toy-sc1 interface with an email when its available button.. sears.com is even starting to sell both the toy-sc1 interface and scc1 universal tuner.

the tuner runs $49 and the interface runs $99

how long is the antenna wire that comes with the tuner? is it long enough to reach the rear spoiler?

Race fan Stan, et al, I'm looking at the TOYSC1 on Amazon.com, it states that most customers also order what looks like a package including a double ended cable, and 2 other objects I can't identify. A Best Buy just opened up the road and I want to do what you did, go there and pay to have this installed in my 08 Prius satellite-ready. Or did you buy the TOYSC1 at Best Buy? Any info appreciated.

When I look at the TOYSC1 on Amazon it tells me that people also buy the Siriushttp://www.amazon.com/dp/product/B000Q9UFKU?tag=priuschatcom-20 - the SCC1 is a tuner module. The TOYSC1 is just an interface box - it doesn't have a Sirius tuner. You need something like a SCC1 or ahttp://www.amazon.com/dp/product/B000ZHRLUU?tag=priuschatcom-20 (which is a dock for a plug-in sirius tuner).

Note that the TOYSC1 on backorder at Amazon. I ordered the TOYSC1 and SCVDOC1 last week through Amazon sellers who had it in stock.

Thanks for the info, which is better? Does one facilitate up and down arrows switching between presets vs stations? Did you use a particular Amazon seller that is reputable?

I do not know from reputable - the one I bought from was something like 98% positive so I guess that's OK.

I think the TOYSC1 has the same preset behavior with the up/down arrows whether you use the SCC1 or the SCVDOC1, and it's different from an OEM tuner (whichever way that is).

I went with a plug-in tuner I have a Stratus 4) because I figure at some point I'd like to use the tuner with a home kit. This way I won't need a second subscription to listen at home. I already have the home kit but haven't installed the home antenna.

Bump up - as of today I've received both the TOYSC1 and the SCVDOC1, so maybe I'll tackle the install this weekend.

I bought through Amazon sellers since Amazon has a 1 to 2-month delay.

The TOYSC1 was sold by RoyalMailers for $84.99 plus $4.98 shipping; they shipped USPS from California and it took about a week to get to PA.

The SCVDOC1 was sold by from AudioVideoDirect for $54.99; AudioVideoDirect uses Amazon for fulfillment, and although Amazon doesn't have the unit in their own stock it shipped immediately and is eligible for free SuperSaver and Prime shipping. Since I have Prime it arrived in a couple of days.

Both items shipped with in a day of placing the order. I'd say that both vendors lived up to their end of the deal fully.
